Without sounding too shirty, I do hope that's a vastly oversimplified plan of what you actually intend to do?

Otherwise you're on a road to disaster, and a lot of dead animals!

I'd love a marine tank, but I really don't have the time, or room for that matter. I had a lovely tropical tank that I loved to bits, but working away for 6 months of the year causes problems, especially when my wife's scared of fish ()

yes m8 it will take a few months to get set up .. i have someone comming to install it with the water all ready so coral can go in in a few days .

then it is down to being patient adding other things slowly .

i would think i`ll have one or two mishaps ,, but hands up who dosn`t

When you say they're going to add the water so you can have coral straight away, please tell me you mean dead coral skeletons?

If not then you have your logic completely the wrong way around. Corals come last and only after many months of water stability.

What parameters will you be checking bsfore adding the fish by the way?

Well done, I'm in the process of setting up a 3x2x2 mixed reef tank, costing me a fortune too lol. Got all my equipment, just need to finish building my stand, plumb my RO unit in (RO water is a must IMO), then i can buy my Live Rock and off we go.

If yo haven't already joined, get over to ultimate reef forums, some great setups, members and ultimatley, advice over there :)

I find watching fish in a fish tank very therapeutic.

Hi m8

yes dead coral .. that is why i put coral as apposed to a coral that is a living thing .

as i say i am having the tank water and sand delivered .. after that taking advice as we go along . as when to add what and when .. the first post was a list of what we can add with each step .. not a time scale ... i won`t add fish until we are told it is ok to do so

Get some sea trout, very handy when you forget to buy the tea! :)

Definately sign up to ** (and/or reefcove.co.uk) as there's a wealth of info on there that can save you a fortune and the lives of your fish.

Oh and get yourself a decent understanding of the basic nitrogen cycle as it'll help explain why you have to wait!

Other than that good luck with it (sorry if my other posts have seemed a little terse BTW).

It's a great, if expensive (more so than photography) hobby that's incredibly rewarding.

Seeing my black clowns breed every month is a really impresive sight.

ive never had marine, i did have tropical fish for a along time, but when they all died off we got goldfish instead, easier to keep

we got rid of our marine setup 8 years ago. we moved house.
ours got so expensive to run, and labour intensive, that we had to pack it up.
6ft x 3ftx2ft tank.
water changes and salt once a week. huge leccy bills.
beautifull to look at, but a lot of work.
and by the way. your tank will take a hell of a long time to mature , and stabilise.

Yup, they're certainly labour intensive!

I had a massive wipe out last year that killed off about £1000 worth of hard corals, some of which I'd grown from tiny fragments. I was absolutely GUTTED and there was little I could do about it. I lost a lot of my enthusiasm after that but having seen my little boy's eye light up when he sees the fish has made me determined to get it back on track.

New, bigger, protein skimmer on order. A couple more Tunze streams to boost the flow even more and maybe even full computerisation should I get time to set it all up.

400W lights running 8 hours a day don't come cheap though!

I'll dig out some pictures of it "pre-crash" tonight If I get chance.

i finally got most of my cabinet finished yesterday, it's rock solid hehe, i just need to stick a couple of doors on the front now. ere's how it looks atm....

ps. Sorry to intrude a little :D

Good luck with this Rog :)

Going back 15 years or so I used to run a 5ft marine tank alongside a 5ft tropical tank  I don't know how I ever found the time but then I didn't have kids then.

You've got your work cut out but I'm sure you must already know that :)

Hope you can keep us updated with some pics as the tank comes along

Looking good Wez, you having a DSB in the sump?

i'm not sure yet, i want carbon, live rock rubble then cheato i think (hence the light in the sump).

I've just put the 1st 5 gallons of RO water into the tank, it's gone up about an inch haha. I'll have another 5 gallons ready in about an hour :D

lol, give it a month and you should get it full

Yawn.....
