maplins

just got a freecom 500GB USB2 for £62

i got my 320gb for £60 earlier this year from maplin. good value for money if you ask me !

those seagate lumps apparently have a reputation for frying the drive due to the power supply being in the base of the enclosure, think that info was on the dabs.com user reviews

last week I bought 500GB LaCie USB external desktop, £63.44
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-077-LC

they run a bit warm,
you can hear them spinning, but quieter than the old PC.

one dodgy usb lead, they're short anyway

they didn't work with the linksys NSLU2, kept on losing comms to the drives either on startup or while in use, but 100% rock solid when plugged into a normal xp machine

mine don't spin down if left alone after 10 mnutes, apparently there are 2 makes of HD used, mine have the samsung spinpoint hard drive fitted which is the one that doesn't spin down, but these drives have an excellent reputation
