Maplins Pelei-style case £39.99

Does anyone's case look like the sides don't meet properly? It's supposed to be water proof to one meter and I know I should expect Peli standards for Maplin prices but mine looks like it wouldn't withstand a shower of rain around the edges.

I think I can see what you mean. Mine isn't too worrying  have you got any pictures of what you mention incase you do have a dodgy one? Not sure I would test mine at 1m kitted out but would be happy to leave it in the rain.

Bit of an update.

I messed mine up when cutting and had to bodge it back together sticking bits of foam back in because I cut hole too big. It looked messy so I used the spare layer of bobbly foam (there is probably a better explanation of that) that came with it to cut around my holes and using strong double sided tape stuck it in. This neatened everything up and make the whole thing look a bit nice and a snug fit.

Use it all the time now, fantastic purchase. Thanks again!

Now why didnt i think of that! Thats my job for tomorrow i think

I also thought about getting some of these instead of the foam

It neatens it up nicely. Double sided tape means it sticks down well too but not permanent if you chose to remove it.

If you did purchase that I would be interested to hear your feedback! Looks like that could be a good investment!

Mine's the same - I knelt on it last night and it hissed as the air rushed out the join(s). I checked that the doodie valve was closed and tried it again with same results so it's defo not water tight.

I got this type of insert in my Peli case (1560) and I have since got a 2nd body (D300s) and grip, so it was just a case of moving a few bits around to fit it in.

 thanks, good to know all works as it should
Unless your sharing that particular case I wouldn't take someone else's experience(s) for yours being watertight.. as I said above mine definitely wasn't.

However, it is Noe as I've replaced the gasket in the lid and all is well :)

I picked up one of these today £45 now but still an excellent price in my opinion, just have to cut the inserts now, how did you all do that little task, I'm guessing with a Stanley knife, I'm quite conscious of the fact you only really get one go at cutting these right :D

Maybe a marker pen outline would be a good idea? :D

Was going to do that anyway Andy, just thought if anyone had found a foolproof way as i know it's an accident waiting to happen to me, possibly tomorrow morning :D

Haha yeah good luck with the cutting. I tried cutting some foam the other day to make a cover for the viewfinder on one of my video cameras and I can say it's not easy stuff to cut accurately.

use a craft knife not a stanley knife, it'll be a little easier

and cut inside the lines then nibble out for a tight fit - remember you ca always take more off, but you cant put it back in

also if you do royally screw it up you can buy flight case foam pretty cheap on ebay

Thanks guys i will try that, did you cut out for the top as well or just in the bottom of the case ?

Regarding earlier comments about an airline carry-on sized case, the Maplin rugged case (460(w) x 350(d) x 150(h)mm) fits the budget carrier restrictions. It isn't fitted with locks, but it does seem to offer a good degree of protection to the contents. It does me for general storage and the car boot.

And if it can fit an RB, it shouldn't have any problems with dainty digital gear!

I bought one of these cases on the strength of this thread, and I must say, I'm impressed...

One question though - the valve - would you open that before getting on a plane to release the internal air pressure and keep it shut at all other times?

Mine's not in the slightest bit air tight, so I just leave the valve done up tight (it's one less hole).

You might want to check yours tho - I did the valve up tight, then stood on the case. I could hear air coming out between the 2 halves of the case, and when I stood of the case I could hear it rushing back in.

Just got one of these, what is everybody doing with smaller accessories? I see Peli users using the accessories flap thing but has anybody thought of cutting the foam in the top section for less fragile accessories?

A bit of an update, which others might find of use.

I had a change of gear which meant getting new foam. Maplins don't supply spare foam sets, so I tried the stuff from eFoam and didn't get on with it all. Considering the price it's pretty disappointing. This was mainly due to the weakness of the foam left between the precut section. It's just too frail and tears too easily.

Noticing this on ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150769713999?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649, I thought it's worth a punt.

According to both websites the sizing looked pretty close, albeit a tad short on the width of the dividers.

Anyway, the dividers came yesterday, so I've been having a play this morning, and so far it's looking good...

All I've had to do is cut off the plastic lugs on the front and rear edge of the base (as these were in the way), and pad the ends with some thin foam that I had left over from the eFoam stuff. I've also added a couple of loops so I can use a shoulder strap.

Hi Geoff, I like the idea of the hooks you added. How did you attach them please? I can't quite see from the picture.

Thanks,

Tracey

Tracey - They're just bolted through. I've cut the bolts down so they don't protrude past the nuts/washers on the inside, and stuck some thread lock on for security. I needed to shave off some of the ribbing on the inside of the case so everything fitted flush. All told they protrude about 6-7mm on the inside

The stainless rings were picked up at a local sailing/canoeing shop. I think they are around £5 for the pair.

just finished putting my camera in the box taken about 30 mins to cut the foam bits out
looks good though
like the idea of the dividers but have little money left till i go
