A couple of days ago Fedex arrived at my door with a digital video recorder from Maplin, the trouble is I've not ordered anything from Maplin so being the good honest chap that I am I refused the delivery. Immediately checked my Maplin account for activity (none), contacted CS and left them to sort it out.

I came in from work last night to a card from Fedex - attempted delivery of an item while I was out, all the details match mine except the Maplin account number.

My top brain is saying Maplin c___up but there's this nagging feeling that it's a scam of some kind though how a scam that has goods delivered to me while not being charged for them would work I don't know.

The scam is you are supposed to accept the goods.

Once inside you realise they are not for you. 30mins later there's a knock at the door and some bloke says Maplin have delivered his goods to your address by mistake.................so you hand them over :)

Let Maplins know all the info and then hopefully they will suspend the account and investigate properly.

A bit spooky that the person ordering knows you have a Maplin account? or maybe their bad luck as you have let Maplins know it isn't you!

I assume Maplins have sent them tracking info so they would only knock on your door when they KNOW it has been delivered, to avoid making you suspicious.

Good luck!

I did think of that possibility guys but there's a couple of problems with it, I live in what is still a pretty small place even though it's called a city and my surname is unusual to the point of being rare, add to that the goods were addressed to me at my address makes it unlikely. I suppose a potential scammer might not know that but I'd still expect them to choose a John Smith or such like.

The name and address on the package and card were mine but the Maplin account number used is different, no unusual activity on my bank account either (yet)

I'd say it's more than likely a cock up on Maplin's behalf rather than a scam

could you not though, accept delivery, then if someone rocked up at your front door claiming it is a mistaken delivery ,tell them to "do one". Keep an eye on suspicious account behaviour for a few days and either keep it or send it back (distance selling regs and all that)?

or am i missing the obvious?

Can't send it back if you didn't order it.

.......and that would make you as bad as the scammer too!

potential for getting your head kicked in or worse?

the goods aren't yours and when the retailer gets charged back for the fraudulent transaction your house will be the first port of call. if you are the "innocent" party then why did you keep the goods so pay up.

etc

You can keep unsolicited goods sent to you through the post.
You are not obliged to return them, Just tell the supplier you have them and will dispose of them after a reasonable time (14 days) if not collected sooner.

Their problem, they must sort it.

is it unsolicited if its been paid for by and delivered to "you"? or if the retailer was scammed out of the goods?

Moot point as I didn't and wouldn't, I don't expect I'll hear anything back from Maplins before Monday and I doubt I'll hear anything useful even then but hopefully it gets sorted.

Agreed. Keep the stuff I would.

It would only be unsolicited goods if they were knowingly and intentionally sent to you by the company concerned and you had not ordered or requested the goods

If the goods were sent to you as a result of a genuine error, or as a result of a criminal act (scam), then they would not be considered unsolicited goods

If you did not ask for them to be sent they are unsolicited.. The problem is the senders.
The Postal laws and sale of goods act always puts the onus on the sender.

You are only required to store them for a reasonable time before disposing of them.

^^....but then there is the question of morals....
