I'd be grateful for any help with this problem.

I've been using a 30 year old Sigma 70-210 zoom lens on my K5 for about a year without any problems until yesterday.

It is a one touch lens, slide the barrel to zoom, rotate it to focus. Normally it is very easy to use to the extent that when angled downwards the lens will sometimes zoom by itself.

Yesterday after using it for a few minutes it suddenly it became very difficult to either zoom or focus - not difficult to achieve focus, simply just turning the barrel.

I then noticed a slightly gooey residue (shown on the attached) on the inner barrel. I guess something that should help the zooming and focusing has failed.

Any ideas what and if it can be repaired? Any suggestions of a place to repair it will also be welcomed. I appreciate this last request is difficult but if anyone has a ball park figure for possible cost, that would be useful too.

Thanks

Dave

It would probably be cheaper to buy another one from the bay, lens repair for older lenses is not really economic.

If your technically confident try fixing it yourself. Nothing to lose realy.

That view makes sense but when buying older lenses can you be sure you know what you're getting?

I recently got a lens repaired and it cost a lot more than the lens was worth, going by what they sell for, but I was happy to do so as the lens is now (I hope :D it seems to be anyway...) in tip top condition and fit for another few decades use :D

So, OP, if you are happy with the lens and want to carry on using it get a quote for its repair and take it from there. Once fixed it may last you another 30 years :D

I don't disagree with you Alan, particularly if its a lens you like and its an expensive one. But if it only costs a tenner for a replacement its worth a punt I reckon. Good idea to look out for old/new stock, places like Ffordes usually have a reasonable selection.

Thanks for the views all; some things to think about.
