Thinking about the options for a pictorially attractive MF lens to use on a D800, sitting on a tripod, using liveview to focus. I like the idea of the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar, or the Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4, which I'm guessing come out of the same factory. I would like something that is actually a bit 'gentle' wide open, and for that reason haven't shortlisted the Sigma Art or the Zeiss Milvus.

Any thoughts?

I like the build of the pre ai lenses but I've no idea if they'll fit your camera (I have a Sony A7.) I only have three, Nikon Kogaku 35mm f2.8, 50mm f2 and 50mm f1.4. Of the three I like the 50mm f2 best. It really is a nice lens and they're all built to last.

I like the dual personality old lenses as at wide apertures they often do have a characterful look but when stopped down they can have a very different look, so you get 2 in 1 :D
