Should the focus ring on this lens spin all the way around or should it lock when it gets to a certain point?

Purchased one of these second hand and the focus ring seems to spin all the way round.

On my 18-105 weather in af or manual my focus ring only moves a third of the way round
definately has limit stops
hope this helps

thanks R33SY, do you think the fact that it moves all of the way around will affect functionality of the lens? if not, i will see if i can get a part refund for it.

My concern would be that it is broken
does it actually focus in manual mode if not then return it
if it does then go for a part refund

Not 100% sure but I think it does keep turning. The reason for this is for when you have the man/auto switch set to auto, you can manually override it, and vice versa. If it went to a stop, you'd end up with the lens snatching out of your hand when using auto focus???? I'll check my lenses when I get home later tonight.

My 70-300 VR turns all the way, as did the 18-135 I used to have...think it's normal tbh..

it seems to focus fine both on manual and auto settings, just seemed a little odd that it was going al of the way around. i did notice that the lens was struggling to focus for close ups though.

Just tested mine again to give a definative answer on the 18-105 vr lens

Mine does not turn all the way around and neither does it rotate when the autofocus is in operation

Sorry if this doesn't help

Thanks for checking, mate. I have contacted the seller and will be asking for a part refund. does your lens perform ok close up to objects?

This lens is now attached to the camera permanently
It is surprising how good it is at close up work its minimum focusing distance is quite small at the begining i wasn't that enthralled with it but it has grown on me and is now a good walkabout lens

sounds like it might not be functioning right in that case. seems to struggle at times.

Mine turned all the way round, as did the ring on my 70-300 VR. Perfectly normal operation. You'll feel some resistance as the ring carries the focus group to the end of its travel, but it should turn past that.

The 18-105 has a basic full time manual focus setup. When the focus gets to the end of it's travel you'll probably feel it get a bit stiffer than carry on turning. Certainly don't send it back as that's how it works. The focus ring doesn't turn when the camera auto focuses, which is another benefit of the FTM focus system.

that is exactly what is happening with mine.

All three of my af-s lenses have the manual focus override and and the focus rings turn all the way around ....its normal, don't worry about it.

managed to get a partial refund back for the lens so it cost me £110 in total. i think i can live with the revolving ring for that price! :)

Hi All, I just end up on this forum when I search something like your topic, my lens 18-105mm on my D90 is also auto rotating previously I assumed its normal but when i got 10-20mm sigma lens it also do auto rotate when auto focus, but after a couple of days the auto rotate stop on those two lenses I thought something wrong on my D90 contact pins I clean it up and still did not to they way it was before which do auto rotate, I brought my D90 to the seller and they told me that this lens 18-105mm never move or auto rotate and there is nothing wrong on the camera as well as the lens, just to prove further I went to some store and try to test their displayed d90 camera and they are all not auto-rotating so now I am totally confused, is these lens 18-105mm is normally not autorotating? or my camera body is damaged, but according to some of you here the lens is normally autorotating on AF mode , I read the manual and there is nothing there telling about the lens that auto rotate, by the way the lens and camera is still doing fine as its still normally focusing on the picture this mean that the internal focus of the lens is working fine.
