Hi folks,

I'm looking for a new tripod head for landscape photography and was initially looking at the 410 geared. I stumbled across the Xpro geared and was just wondering if anyone had any experience with them. The main reason I asked is I've just seen a video review on the Xpro and the reviewer said it had a fair bit of play in the head. I'm just wondering if this is the case across the board.

I'm also looking to upgrade my tripod and have been looking at the Manfrotto 190 and 055 CX tripods. The 190 is rated as 7kg payload and the 055 is 9kg, I'm using a gripped 6D with 24-105. Will I notice any difference in the stability between these two or will the 055 be overkill?

Thanks for the help :)

No experience with the Xpro... it seems to be a new "light duty" geared head (8lb capability). The 410 is a bit beefier (11lb) and the 405 is beefier yet (16lb). IME the 410/405 do not have play in them. The 410 has slightly different controls and coarser gearing.

In general, get a tripod/head rated for at least 2x the load you are going to put on it if you want "stability." The load ratings stated are usually "failure ratings."

Super! Thanks for the help Steven, I think I'll just stick with the original idea of the 410, it's seems very well regarded. I'll go for the beefier 055 too.

Thanks. :)

Have you seen this video review of the Xpro geared head. In windy conditions, it's far too wobbly. I've tried three examples, all the same. 410 is a nice geared head, but very heavy.

Yeah that's the video I was referring to Richard. So it's not just a one off then. Thanks for the info.

Unless you feel you really need the extra battery power that the grip will give, I's remove it before mounting the kit on a tripod. I've seen too many reports of the grips getting stuck on the body (something to do with the gear train inside the grip IIRC) needing a hacksaw to remove them to take the risk. The grip will also add extra height and wobble.

Thanks for the heads up. It's actualy a third party (meike) grip which I've used other cameras without issue, however this particular version was a real pain to screw on and doesn't seem as good quality as the one I had for my 60D. I never even considered that it could get stuck, I'm going to remove it now.

Thanks.
