A budget consideration, rather than a budget issue, but are there any good alternatives (decent quality, and not made of poor metals that will break when you tighten a screw, etc.)?

There are copies available of both that are of decent quality, if you prefer the 'guarantee' of a branded product then Calumet do own-label versions of both the nano and 026 umbrella adapter clones for the same sort of money as the Ebay sellers.

Thanks FITP. You mean like this one?

Is that a screw-clamp on the hot shoe?

Or maybe this is it (looks same as Manfrotto....)

I've got examples of both of these and I prefer using the first one, although the coldshoe clamp (which is of the 'stroboframe' type) isn't interchangeable (held on with two screws) unlike the Manfrotto clone which accepts a regular coldshoe fitment.

Superb little things.

I have three Manfrotto 026s swivels, and now have five of these and prefer them. Cheep (like the birdy), light (very imp to me after the Manfrotto), solid etc etc.

You have to be careful with some of the cheaper ones (not saying this applies here) as they can have plastic coldshoes which just disintegrate. The trouble is that they look just like the metal ones in the tiny auction pictures, so you don't know until they arrive from China....

My first three were the metal coldshoe with grooves that you see selling for £5, but the last one was the cheap plastic one.

I think I have never used them to be honest, much prefer to put a 602 on them and leave it there.
