Havent used one on a monopod, but on a tripod they are smooth to operate and stable. I use one with up to a 500mm with no problem. Compared to other makes they are good value IMHO.

Hi

I had one for about two years it works very well and if used the right way up works just as well as the more expensive heads. For the price its a bargain

I have one, am thinking of moving up to Wimberely type heads, but are they any better than the 393, methinks not.............

Dunno, but the 393 has served me well.

Haven't used it on a monopod but I use it a lot on my Manfrotto 055. It as an excellent piece of kit for the price when the alternatives are at least 4 or 5 times the price.

I absolutely would not even consider this on a monopod! I'd rather just screw the tripod to the lens foot of the camera, in fact thats what I usually do. Havnig said that, if I regularly used a monopod I'd get a dedicated monopod head like the RRS one.

Dunno, but the 393 has served me well.

Recently, I've used both, now I have the Jobu Black Widow gimbal.

Both are quite smooth to use, the big difference for me was when moving the tripod and lens combo about, looking for better spots to shoot from. The Wimberley type gimbal, for me, is much more comfortable to carry on the shoulder.

I have to say though, the 393 is a really great value product compared to other gimbals.

It's a bit "OTT" for a monopod I think, but it is great on a tripod and as mentioned, a quality item for the price .......... recommend it

Thanks guys. The illustration shows the lens hanging from the bracket with the lens foot at the top above the lens. Is that the normal way of mounting it? merv:thinking:

You can use it either way, but I always sit the lens on top of it in the lower position.

Do you think it's feasible to do airshows with this kit? Would it be possible to track aircraft with it on a tripod? I can see it may be easier on a monopod. merv:thinking:

My dad just got one of these for airshows for a 800mm sigma. He said it's fine if you have loads of space around you but if it's crowded you can't use it.

got mine this spring, brilliant value for money. Don't hang my lenses use mine in the 'u' position. used on both a monopod and tripod with no problems at all. solid well made. simple to adjust stiffness. good lens footplate easy to adjust to get the weight distribution of a lens spot on. not sure about airshows as it would depend how vertical you want the lens to get?

Thanks guys. Polochick, was that on a monopod or a tripod? Obviously if you are looking up steeply or overhread at aircraft, neither monopod nor tripod can be used. Quite often aircraft are out in front of you at a shallower angle. merv:thinking:

What lens are you thinking of using the 393 with?
