Hello,

I have a question about assembling this head and tripod.

When attaching the tripod to the head, the instruction manual for the 055XB says that the head should be fastened to the main screw of the centre column. So far so good.

Apart from this, there are three smaller screws at the top of the centre column that also need to be screwed into the base of the head. The problem is that I don't see openings for the three smaller screws in the base of the head, only an opening for main central screw.

Any ideas?

There aren't any threaded holes, they are just grub screws to keep the head from turning

Do them up a bit, stops having to screw the whole head down crazy tight

Thank for the reply. So without the three screws the head won't stop turning? This is exactly the problem I'm having. Two of the three axes are rigid - the front-to-back and side-to-side movements.

However the swivel base keeps turning. Is it because the grub screws aren't in place?

Thank you.

I don't know much about three way heads, but presumably you can lock or at least tighten the main body up to stop it turning in a panoramic 360 degree motion. Maybe the lowest of the three handles shown in the picture turned in a clockwise direction?

Once scewed down on the tripod the head should be reasonably well done up and not that prone to twisting round. The grub screws are there to make sure it stays put without having to overtighten the head by hand

Understood. Actually I think it's the entire head that's twisting, presumably because the central screw is not tight enough and the grub screws aren't in place.

I'll give this a whirl this evening.

Thanks for the help.

The three grub screws don't have locating holes. They just bite into the base of the head once it's been screwed down reasonably tight, to make sure it can't rotate. Most Manfrotto head bases have angled flats underneath so the screws will locate and lock in any position.

Hi there,

Yes, that's correct. The base of the head does indeed have angled flats on its underside, so that's what I was missing.

Thanks for the help!
