Yes
Hi all - the upper section on my Manfrotto 458B won't extend.

On the leg that's faulty the bottom section comes out, stiffly, and when I try to push it back there is a lot of resistance as if I'm compressing air inside it.

Any advice is appreciated.

how old is it? a lot of my manfrotto stuff has got 8 yr warranty.

I bought it second hand unfortunately and also I've disassembled it now in an attempt to see what's wrong. I think that fact and the second hand purchase might invalidate any warranty :)

i remember i ordered some spares for my Manfrotto yrs ago and i repaired it myself .. was straight forward . if i could do it , every one can ...

Yeh I know - but as I said above a new leg is £271 +VAT, however a complete replacement tripod can be found from £280. So it's more expensive to replace the leg than buy a new tripod!!

So you can see why I'd like to try *repairing* it and not *replacing* a leg.

Is it this place you have been in touch with

https://www.manfrottospares.com/en/

If not I suggest you try them and see whether they can help???

Edit doh! Tired and missed your post above, sorry :coat:

Just talked directly to their service dept, he confirmed that the leg is not serviceable at all and it's a complete replacement. He did say he though the price was a little ridiculous and agreed that it basically writes-off the whole thing. He said that it was a known issue but it's well outside warranty - so it's for the scrap pile I'm afraid.

Can you not lube it up if it's only sticking? Maybe if it's rusty inside then WD40 to loosen it off and then when it will freely move get some lube in it?

Agree with this

Or GT85 spray if you want it nicer smelling :)

You've nothing to loose - do you know where / why it's sticky ? Have you been able to dismantle it into pieces ?

As it's officially a write off what have you to lose by having a go yourself? The legs will dismantle because they were put together in the first place all you have to do is reverse the process. Take it to pieces and clean/lube it. If it don't work you lost nothing. If it does work you've learned something and saved nearly £300. Know what I'd try before getting out the credit card!

Yeh I'll have a go. Trouble is that I really don't think it's intended to be disassembled :)

Thanks for that. Still a lot of cash. I have emailed them to see if my 2-legged tripod is any good to them as spares.
