weekly Mandy's first 52 challenge 2014 week 52 added and all finished now

Not keen on the colour but there's something about #1 that makes it look like another planet. Maybe with an awful lot of photoshop it could be floating in space with some moons going round it

Well here we are on to week 5 already i cant get over how quickly these weeks are flying by, i have to say this weeks theme has not got me all excited as i find it tricky to do. This i think is going to a post and be dammed week for me, my set up was my 400d and 18-55mm lens in manual mode settings were roughly 1/125 f11 ISO 100 at 55 mm. A incense stick in its holder on my kitchen worktop in line with a peace of black card which i stuck to my wall, another week where i am like an octopus as i don't have one off them bendy desk lights. So held the light on to the smoke to light it up with my left hand, camera in my right hand and the flash on the right hand side off the smoke continuous shoot mode and i hoped for the best anyway after 100 or so images here are my humble offerings to this weeks theme.

Mandy, I like both and prefer the first on, it is simple and understated and I think (on the larger image on Flickr) that the light section in the top left hand adds to the picture.

I know you do it for copyright reasons but that AJPhotos logo distracts me every time.

Thanks for taking the time to look I am not sure which one of the images i prefer yet, the jury is still out deciding on which i like best, and sadly the water marks staying put but i will have a play with it in lightroom and fade it a little.

I thought you might be the first to post! I prefer the 2nd one I think, due to the blue colour. What did you use to make the smoke? I have my idea, but just intrigued.

Hi, vast improvement

I like both but prefer #1 as you've contained all the smoke. Just a little light spilled onto the BG. Easy enough to remove in camera or in post.

Lovely detail in both.

Quick off the mark.

Cheers.

No preference because I like both of those. The first is sharper and is contained in the frame, the second is softer, less substantial and could be infinite. Both have a complicated simplicity :) which appeals.

Thanks for taking the time to look, I used insence sticks which I mentioned In my opening post.

Thanks for the comments I would of liked not to have the light onto the background, but no idea of how to get rid with out spoiling the image.

well done Mandy like #1 best, very quick off the mark :)
I have one or two ideas but don't think that they will work out :(

Thank you Judi for taking the time to look.

Thanks for the comments kev I am glad you like them both.

Both effective and right on theme. I like the blue one which for me has more appeal :)

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to look.

Hi Mandy - very quick off the mark again and both are wonderful images I really like them to the point where I might have a go at some thing similar

Thanks very much Craig I appreciate your comments. And for taking the time to look.

Hi Mandy,
Quick off the mark eh?
My vote goes to #1 too, for its composition, mainly, its more distinct in the frame. I like the colour of #2 but the first just shades it ;)

Does anyone else see objects/figures in these type of shots?
In #1 I see a horse head looking right out of the frame, its two ears pricked up at the top and its muzzle/face looking down to the right.
No? Just me? :D

I am always quick off the mark, thanks for taking the time to look and comment i think if i could of put the blue into image one i think i might off been onto a winner. I am not so sure where you are finding the horses head from tho lol .

FWIW, I've never used a light to illuminate the smoke. I tend to prefocus, which is what I believe the lamp light is for, so I don't need it. How close was the incense stick to the BG? If it's too close this might have caused the spill of light onto the BG.

Cheers.

The blue smoke is certainly more eye catching to me Mandy, well done (y).

Think I need to look on youtube for some lessons in smoke photography :D

On second look Mandy, I would say its more of a cow than a horse :D
Still just me that sees it? :cow:

I prefer the edit although I think I'd have been tempted to do a little more with the patterns of smoke. Maybe add a mirror image in PP.

Hi Mandy

I can't crit either of your Smoke images as I failed miserably when I tried to do some- both are super shapes , the 1st one I like for it's simplicity , the edited blue one for it's color....
