Hi all...

Best wishes to all for the forthcoming year!

I'm a Manchester based model and wardrobe stylist that's about to step on the other side of the camera.
I've always had an interest in the creative side of photography so I'm here, ready and waiting to listen and learn.

Hopefully I'll pick up enough advice and tips to get me on my way, get my first dSLR and get creative!

Any advice more than welcome!
Vicky

Welcome to Talk Photography. I've been a member here for about four or five months now and learned plenty. My advice would be to pick a subject you are interested in take some pictures and ask for feedback. There are lots of people on here that have a vast knowledge of the subject and can give some great advice.

Anyway just find a camera you are happy with, take lots of pictures and enjoy yourself. Thats the way forward :)

Hi Vicky and welcome to talk photo:wave:

Welcome Vicky, I am sure you'll pick up plenty of tips on the forums.

I'm a Manchester based model

A self portrait should be your first image posted

Thanks for the welcomes guys.

The image on my profile is me, but sadly not by me! I'm not that good... yet! :)
Hunting for cameras as we speak. I've been looking at used D50's that come with the 18-55 kit lens. Is that a good place to start or would a different lens be more suited?

Thanks again!

Welcome! and a happy new year.

Interesting move Vicky, welcome.

Thanks again to all those that said hi since last time... :)

Cameras? Canon 300D and Sigma 70-300 lens or Nikon D50 with 18-55?

I am sure you would be pleased with either a Nikon or a Canon camera there aren't any real lemons out there. The 300D is an older camera though are you sure it is the 300D and not a 400D?

If you post your budget, what you are interested in photographing and anything you already have then I am sure you will get a number of ideas.

I have just bought a Nikon D40x with a kit lens from Digital rev for my wife. It is a lovely camera with a 10Mp sensor and the kit lens is of a good quality. It is a modern camera and works with virtually all new lenses (anything starting AF-S!) current price from digital rev is less than £350 including a 2Gb memory card, cleaning kit and carrying case. You might get hit for import duty when it comes into the country but you usually dont and it you do it is not likely to be more than another £30.

Alternatively they have a D80 for £530 with a similar kit lens and accessories

If Canon is your bag then you can get a EOS 350D for £300

or an extra £20 with a 4Gb memory card

Maybe speak to Ian (Kerso) when he gets back if you have any worries about buying from Hong Kong

OR have a look on the for sale forum on here there are usually some well looked after cameras on there where members have upgrades (and lots have recently)

But most importantly go have a look at them at your local camera shop. Even if you don't buy there you will at least be able to try a few and see which fits best in your hands etc.
