Manchester Band require photographer for promotional photos

It sums up the reason why photography is becoming harder to be a viable profession. Too many willing to work for an ego stroke, and to make themselves feel good.

No-one is owed a living mate - who are you to say people shouldn't do stuff for free if they enjoy it?

If anyone knows a plumber, carpenter and tv engineer or accountant. i need work from all of you to make my wife's business and our house more successful for me.

The difference is that no-one (ok there might be a few weirdos!) does those things for an enjoyable hobby, unlike photography.

Sure they do, I know several people who make wooden furniture as a hobby, but I'd still expect to pay them were I to have one build me a desk.

Ok, now really done with this thread. :)

If you're at the point where you can charge for your work, then good for you. You've reached your goal.

If you still want to bulk out your portfolio, make some connections, promote yourself and consider yourself an amatuer.. well. That's who we asked for.

If you're the amatuer above, but are a damn good photographer (like most I've looked at here) then bonus situation!

Everyone who has said they'll give it a go fitted into that last catagory for me, what a talented bunch!

Sending out some PMs, cheers to everyone who's supporting us, if i've missed you out it's because I missed your post.

It's not going to be a gig shot. Ideally just something plain.
To the people that were interested in doing some gig shots for fun though, maybe add us on facebook and then when we're gigging close to you, you could pop down :-) we'd totally get you your tipple for the evening (not champagne) and some nobby's nuts.

I think for friends and family, things like this are fine.

I did promotional head shots for an actor a few years ago who was an acquaintance with the easy-going attitude of "he gets something out of it, I get experience". The images ended up, promotionally, on the BBC's website without any attribution to myself. Needless to say I wasn't happy and asked for them to be removed.

I've been burnt a few times by people who aren't friends/family and, personally, I think there's better ways to enjoy photography. I've learnt the hard way about being too soft when it comes to getting payment.

In this instance if the band and photographer are happy, then there's clearly no issue. Would be nice to see them when they're done :)

all fair points.. all good banter.. that's what this forum is all about. there really is no need to get hot under the collar about it though. chillax (as they say in rock n roll )

:D

dont you like your bass man..you dont seem to cover him well in the shots
;)

Haha cant believe how much of an argument this caused .

Just become a fan of you on facebook, I didnt get a pm but no worrys :) offer still stands if you need it.

Matt, sorry I did try to have a look at your website, but unfortunatley it doesn't work for me! This might be my fault, i'm having problems getting firefox to update my flash player.

I think we're doing this shoot with Tiler65, he was one of the first to display interest and his work looks very nice.

We'd be up for doing more, or can let people know of our live gigs if ever they want to build up their portfolios though :-)

Thanks for becoming a fan.

Mr Crow, we didn't have a bassist for ages! That probably explains the lack of bassists in photo's ha!

looks like someone is holding a fender bass...over on the right at the back
no?

Can you post a link to your site and I'll have a look - sounds like you have the images coming off your HD and not from the web.

whatever he will pay wont pay for all that (professional) amateur junk you haul around...so a freebie will boost your ego and make you feel its all been worth the ££££

i you are a pro...then you need to keep your cash flow up for more and the latest goodies.??

its a puzzlement

If someone whos does photography wants to do the shoot for free then what is the problem with them doing so, it gives them probably something different to shoot and the band gets the photos they want, it isnt as if the band wanted a proffessional to do the shoot for free.
Also comparing an amateur tog to a plumber/electrician is ridiculus.

you are right...work done now in homes need to have the work certified...even if done by an amateur and in particular electrical work...

i would compare an amateur photographer...job wise ..to an estate agent

I haven't read further than page one so it's probably turned into the usual bunfight by page four, my view is I don't see this as being any different to the models for pictures that goes on.

A model poses for free, a tog shoots for free he gets a free model she gets some free shots on a CD.

This is the same thing with a band
