I use Lightroom to manage my work flow for stills, and while it can do video I feel it's not ideal and it's tools aren't the best and I'd like to keep things separate for now.

Is there something I could you which would allow me to keyword and search based on metadata etc? Maybe Bridge?

The usage is very much personal, my video skills suck but it would be nice to be able to find the videos of the kids I know exist some place!

you could still use Lightroom.

I import my videos into Lightroom within a specific folder for Video's. They are then segregated as to the shoot/ client. I now rename them as I would a set of still images.. So that's one piece of search metadata. You can now add keywords, to individual clips or to all the clips.

You can now use Lightroom's export facility to export those clips you want to a working folder.

I expect the video features within Lightroom will be enhanced, possibly exporting directly into Premier or similar, but we'll have to wait for that

Afaik there aren't really any great solutions for the average freelancer out there.

Photomechanic and lightroom can both do it, but neither are an ideal solution.
Final cut server is good but overkill for a lone shooter.

Tbh, for basic metadata and keywording, especially if you're already familiar with it, lightroom's probably your best bet.
