Man/Woman Cave/Den Update 15th Oct

looking good mate brick work looks nice and tidy

Have you chosen roof tiles yet?

I love that scene on Hot Fuzz - I start laughing about it when they arrive at the supermarket! (It's one of my favourite films ever)

Man den looks good, I wish I had room for one!

I haven't seen them yet, they should be flat.

Hot Fuzz ranks in my top 10 of favorites.

Why no window? I can't help but think your going to get fed up looking out from the back of your house at all that plain brickwork.

1800mm patio doors are enough for natural light where I need it and it's not that great an expanse of brick work to look at. There is also a tree blocking part of it and I could easily add a window at a later date. The area where the window would be is going to be for the projector and studio gear so it's one less light source to cover up. Ill add a wider shot soon.

Even now it's better to look at than 2 old sheds.

I'm on earlies this week so they were as seen by the time I came home around 2.30pm. The builder usually turns up around 8.30am and lets himself in by the side gate and gone by 5pm ish unless something need finishing off that day and he was been around until 9pm when concreting the base.

So if anyone in Doncaster wants a good builder let me know.

Hes bang on with his work.

You still have some way to go to beat my best mates man cave. He built it from scratch from old concrete garages and whatever he could salvage. It also has a 4x2 metre pool in it with the massive turbine at one end so you can swim against the current :)
Needless to say we always end up back at his place after a few beers.

Can't fault him at all.

That's an impressive man cave, slightly better than the wooden shed!

It replaces 2 sheds although one was quite substantial as it was an old school shed which was about 10x8 and built to last.

I found a website dedicated to man caves and some where huge and about as well kitted out as something from MTV's Cribs.

Soffit and Fascia should be fitted tomorrow and roof tiled by Saturday, the doors should also be fitted Monday. It will be quite a change when I next see it as I'm away from tomorrow afternoon until Tuesday for the BSB round at Cadwell Park.

Strangely it feels bigger now the roof is making it enclosed.

And you've got the TV ariel up already.:lol:

looks like you have a proper builder there
why no windows

1 less light source for when I use the projector, it would have been covered all or most of the time anyway so I thought no point. I could add one later easily enough.

The builder has been great.

with no windows it's certainly going to be very cave like
you sound deadening it all else you will have some complaints

Well its looking good. How long did it take you to get the planning sorted with the council?

I will insulate the roof but other than that there are noisier neighbours than me....just.

No planning permission required, kept within permitted development so 1m away from boundries no more than 30sq m of floor space and height no more than 4m.

Nice one might just have to get the wife to buy me one :D

Just about finished the building work now, the builder got a window fitter to fit the glass and one cracked so that should be replaced by the end of the week. I've spent the last weekend and every morning this week before work painting. The inside has had 2 coats of diluted mat emulsion sprayed on and the out side is 80% done with Sandtex.

Flickr seems to be playing up so will add photos shortly.

Are you sure about that ?
I have just been informed by my architect and the structural steel building supplier that the 1 metre rule was changed back in 2008 and if it's that close it now must not be higher than 2.5 metres, planning portal 3rd bullet point down
Luckily I built my workshop just before that changed, but I now can't build another exactly the same so close to the boundry without getting pp.

Checked with local council website plus builder knows local regulations. 2.5 for height applies to single pitched roofs, 4 for double pitched.

Well the Man Cave has electricity now so fully operational although not quite finished.

Projector up and running using some white background paper until I can source a proper screen around 100 inches wide :D

Picked up a slate bed American style pool table yesterday and it looks superb.

I've managed to hide all the shelves and work bench out of the shots

Just a bit of painting and tidying and it's finished for now........

Do you actually need a screen? I just have a white painted wall and it does a great job.

The room looks absolutely mint... What a great job

First time I tried it on the wall it was ok but in bright scenes the mortar joints showed up quite a lot although it was a B-Movie...Hell Comes to Frog Town :D Alien looked pretty good on the paper, it's an old projector but still looks great going over old DVD's which don't get watched much as Blu rays have taken over. I'll do some better shots when I've tidied up a little showing the working side to the play side.

Ah... I didn't know it was brickwork, I thought it was a skimmed wall.. Can't tell viewing on my phone. I get it now.

I thought that too. Maybe that's an idea skim the wall and paint it white no need for a paper screen then

You could also dot and dab the wall in plasterboard and then you just need to skim the tapered board joints
Simple enough to do and then just paint
