This post is just for fun.

During a recent trip over to the states I became fascinated with some of the MvF food style food challenges they offer over there.

My question to the forum is:- Are any of you guys aware of any type challenges in Wales and the rest of the UK?

If anyone has any information please let me know as I know want to try some new challenges .

Cheers

Big Frey!

Pete's Eats in Llanberis has a "Big Jim" meal, money back if you can finish it.

From the food page on the website:

Big Jim£12.00Liver, bacon, sausage, onions, fried pots, fried toms. mushrooms, chips, peas, gravy.

dont know if they still do it ,but The Farmers Arms,St. Brides Major, Bridgend. used to do a desperate Dan ,that would come out of the kitchen with bull horns on it.. about 4 pounds of meat on the plate, without the trimmings...the landlord was saying that only a few had ever finished it..and mostly thin blokes  you were allowed to go for a walk ,and have a second go ..but every scrap had to be ate :) free of charge if you done it, £20 if you didn't...also they used to ring a bell when it was brought out ...

There's a place in glasgow in the west end called ketchup that do amazing burgers and they have a burger challenge. Its about three times the size of the other burgers and if you finish it you get your photo up on a wall.

there was a pub in portsmouth that did something like this. if you finished you got a free desert.. my hubby finished kids got the desert.. it was like a massive huge mixed grill.

I've been watching loads of clips on you tube the last couple of days and was dreaming of 'brisket' last night :D

The Pub between Rawcliffe and Snaith used to do a 76oz steak and all the trimmings, free if you finished it all off. Not been down that way in about 15 years though.

used to be a pub round here in Norfolk that did a 72 oz steak with chips (I am pretty sure in proportion to a 16 oz steak) and extras.....

If yuo ate it all it was free....... we were in there for a normal meal once.... some rugger boys in... all wanting the 72 oz steak

"sorry we don't have any, but you can have 2 x 36 oz"
"we want 72's"

repeat ad nauseum....

Used to be a few places in Joburg that offered 1.5 kg steaks, free if you could finish it within an hour. I never tried, 250 grams of steak is enough of a challenge!

There was an Indian in Bradford that did a Naan Bread Challenge, can't find any info about it now :( just mentions from years ago.

Not food but beer, which is nearly the same to some. A public house on Shirland RD near Lords Cricket ground which I think was called the Warrick or similar, has a near 150 year tradition in drinking different real ales, 9 of them, very strong, mixed weights, all in a set order, from one end to the other....Drink all nine and your name would be carved into history along with the other hundred or so ... yes only a hundred or so. ;) Your allowed to practice, and as we where big drinkers back then nine seemed easy on paper ...however in reality we only ever managed 3 or 4 before being completely mullered and couldn't even make it back to the bar let alone think about the next deadly pint. :help:

... if you entered seriously they required you had a medical back up team on hand.

I watched this the other week, thought it was amusing. I saw the ones with the really spicy hot wings and the deep dish pizza

I'm sure I've seen a few of these sort of things around. I think there's a breakfast one at a cafe in Charlton or Plumstead or somwhere

I used to work at a Big Steak pub too many moons ago and our challenge was for the customer to finish a 32oz steak plus all the trimmings on it and they'd get a free dessert

Yip. Came across a few of these drinking trophy ones in Joburg too. You got your name inscribed on a plaque if you made it. I knew a few people who did but my son, shall we say, regretted the attempt :). Never tried it myself, my heavy boozing days were over by then! There was another 'competition' I remember too, involving the curry from hell. I love curry, but swallowing something that's pulsating like lava on the plate is a bit beyond me.

The Hoggit & Hoof in Newbury offers a one hour 72oz Steak Challenge. :puke:

Also, if you're ever in Denver, CO, USA, you can try the Beau Jo's 14lb Mountain Pie Pizza Challenge...

Pitch diner in bridgend rugby club does it you can find them on facebook and the internet

Problem with junk food in this country is its exactly that. You go to a joint that does it all pizza, kebab, burgers, fried chicken etc.. and its just cheap frozen rubbish. American pig-outs take pride in there food there making, brining there brisket over night then cooking it low and slow all day is just one example. My partners boyfriend is American but they plan to live there not here otherwise i would love to open a decent pig-out with him here in wales.

Chester (which is almost in Wales) has Hickory's, which is pretty close to the MvF style cooking, with ribs, brisket, pulled pork, etc...

In addition to their Suicide Wings (which are pretty naughty on their own), there is also the Homicide Wings challenge.

Abercrave Inn did a mixed grill, but that was some years ago. I also think i saw something similar in Cafe Calcio in Cardiff.

Both places are worth going to anyway, and the Abercrave Inn does a good selection of whiskys.

Uncle Joes Diner between York and Scarborough. I pass it every day and not given in to try one of their challenges yet.

Current one is the farmyard challenge.

1lb beef chilli
1lb pulled pork
1lb chicken breast
1lb chipolata sausages
1lb mash potato
3 fried eggs
14 onion rings
Gravy or BBQ sauce.

All meat weight is after cooking not before.

( Just as an idea of size. 1lb of chipolatas is 17 sausages )

Not yet. The guy who did best said the secret was to have a good breakfast and dinner before, not starve yourself.

The previous one was a 6lb burger with three buckets of fries. That's 24 quarter pounders for the mathematically challenged!

Hungry hossee in Corby where I live does "the big one", a massive breakfast challenge.

three sausages, three fried eggs, three potato waffles, three potato scones, three burgers, three portions of beans, three rashers of bacon, three hash browns, three slices of black pudding, three portions of mushrooms, three square sausages, three slices of fried bread, three rounds of bread and butter, three pieces of toast

The breakfasts there are amazing!

LOL thanks for pointing that out. My partners sister!

No problems.........

but to digress...

If your partners sister is a Yank, then surely your partner is too..:shrug::shrug:

Would love to have a go at the Saltdean Sizzler at Pauls Pizza's in Brighton.....although I doubt my digestive system would thank me

Big Frey!

It's your lucky night! Coincidently my friend just posted picture on FB of him eating a giant steak it turns out he is in the Grill steakhouse in Ponty where they do a few challenges like the '60oz mix grill' the '60oz steak' and a giant dessert challange. However if you don't want to do a challenge they also have massive meals on there normal menu such as a 42oz hamburger called 'godzilla' or even the 90oz burger!!
