Yes
I reported yesterday on one of my 120 film backs winding a new roll of Neopan B&W right through from start to finish in my 645 Pro. I don't recall having any problems previously with this back.

Last night I got partway into rewinding the film in blackout conditions back to the beginning to try again. I found that the film was chewed along one edge - about a foot from the "finish" end. This made no sense to me but anyway I binned the film and loaded another.

This new film also wound partway through on the "start" button and I noticed that the film frame counter was not resetting to 1. Pressing the start button again wound it right through again.

So out came that film and guess what the same damage in the same place.

So I've tried a different spool/cassette which was preloaded with some fomopan and this time it works perfectly.

I'm going examine the cassette very closely: maybe it's worn and it's not up to being motor-wound?

Okay, more of the same. I tried to rewind another film which had wound right through on the "start" button. In darkness obviously :cuckoo:

I tried to rewind the film on the cassette and found that the film and the paper backing got all out of synch and even though the film rewound satisfactorily, the paper backing started to form a loop of slack material. Another one in the bin:thinking::bang:

So my question, please, is whether it would be normal in rewinding a roll of 120 fillum for the film and backing paper to get out of kilter?

You don't rewind 120 Film,The original-Now empty spool is changed to be the spool that the next film is wound onto.

Before you trash any more film just use your already trashed film for practice, do it in daylight. I've got a roll of 120 film that's about 20 years old that I just re-use over and over again for testing, you do have to be careful when re-spooling to avoid the annoying bulge or you can just move the tape that holds the film to the backing paper.

Hiya. I think you've missed the point possibly that I'm trying to rewind to the beginning a film which my Mamiya 645 Pro has wound right through on "start" - so when it should have wound the film to the first frame and reset the frame counter.
I took the "wound through" film from one position in the film carrier and put it back on the start spool so that the ratchetted film advance could work for me.

Ah, so it is a known phenomenomenomenon... Practice will make perfect, thanks.

Yes, if you're trying to respoool it will do it. I always try to respool by hand as it's easier to adjust it and make sure it's spooling correctly.

Out of interest, why do you respool please? I'm assuming you use the "hold one end and let it all hang out" technique?

I just respool when I'm testing the film transport on new cameras or backs, just to make sure everything functions as it should. I only have one practice roll of 120 so it gets a lot of testing and is now getting a bit tatty And also I try to respool from reel to reel without too much film flapping about.

Good idea. Maybe I'll fish one out of the bin.

Faced with a 7 mile walk today on National Trust property I picked up my battery gripped 645 Pro, thought, weighed it in my hand and put it down again, grabbed the old tin box 1000S 645, 45mm lens, light meter and several rolls of Ektar. Lost the lens cap in the first two miles, back tracked a half mile and then decided to leave it wherever it fell. Only used one film. Who says MF is expensive?
