Dear All,

Just a while ago bagged a good deal at evilbay :D for a Mamiya 645 1000s with 80mm lens and formally entering to MF family. Shall be grateful if you kindly explain me the following details please being a novice in MF.

1. Is this a correct battery for Mamiya 645 1000s or does it has any other battery also other than this. ( the manual is bit confusing)

Linky

2. Where can I purchase and process the film economically..?

3. Any other advice regarding this particular camera..?

Best Regards,
R

Hi,

Great that you've got a medium format camera, I really want to get into it as well. I can't help you with the camera but as to purchasing film and processing I can.

There are several good places for getting film, try:

7dayshop

http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=777

They do a wide range of colour negative/transparency film as well a B&W (but not Ilford film any more sadly). If you order from them make sure the item is in stock first or it can be months before you get it if its on backorder.

AG Photographic

http://www.ag-photographic.co.uk/

Stock about every type of film there is and have great customer service especially if you have any questions over the use film types, developing etc.

Silverprint

http://www.silverprint.co.uk/
Likewise stock about every film known.

For processing there are likewise several good places that I use regularly (not for 120 thought the same should apply):

The Darkroom

http://www.the-darkroom.co.uk/

Excellent processing quality and turnaround time, they usually have my E-6 films back with me within 3 days of me sending them. Do all types of film.

Peak Imaging

http://www.peak-imaging.co.uk/

Same level of quality and service as above although their prices are a bit higher. Also do all types of film.

Club35

http://www.club35.co.uk/

Once again excellent quality and service, but to my knowledge they only process 120, B&W and E-6 once a week so it can take a while longer to get stuff back or so I've heard. I usually use them for my colour negative developing and printing. Do all types of film.

Ilford Lab

http://www.ilfordlab.com/

Only does B&W (although they will develop colour negative films the prints will be in B&W) and are almost unique in that they print on proper black and white paper and don't cheat like most places (including some of those above) by printing on colour paper, so you get wonderful B&W prints with deep blacks and bright whites with no chance of a possible slight tint.

Hope this helps you

I have the lower spec m645j (that only goes to 1/500).

4SR44 is the right battery for the body.

If you have one, the eye-level CdS prism finder has a separate SR44/LR44 button battery to power it. If you have the waist level finder (that you look down into) then that doesn't require independent power.

Thank you so much Sam and Rob...!
You guys are great

If you guys ever turn your wheel to the other side of M62 to HUmberside, I owe you a pint..!

Economically ?

buy film online as suggested above
the most economical way to process film is to do it yourself, b/w is easy but you'll need some gear, colour is slightly tougher and you'll need some more gear.
I dunno what online processing charges are for E6 and C41 but I take mine to a lab in Leeds the old fashioned way...by hand.

CCimaging do a fine job

3. The winding handle will fall off a lot, apart from that I used one for a few years without any problem.

I have the same camera, I adore it!
As for your film processing question....Grab some film from the internet, then when you're done take it to a local lab that can process it if you can. Quicker than sending it away to a lab, and no postage to pay.
Snappy Snaps do 120 film to CD quite well, there aren't many about though, there's one in leeds for sure. edit: just seen you're in leeds too :)
Alternatively, get a scanner that does 120 film such as the epson 4870 or canon 8800F (about £100 on the bay) and take it to snappysnaps in leeds, ask for C41 process only... £3.50 or at jessops, £4.

At least it's not just me!
