I've been fiddling with NVidia shield Android TV since the recent Amazon Prime day. I was sold by the news that it can run Plex Media Server because my NAS is too weak to do anything other than serve up files and some basic web pages.

Android TV is slick and all, but I don't feel any benefits upgrading from my built-in Samsung F8000 series smart features. As long as the TV can play videos it's fine. NVidia in-house game streaming is nice though, but the 2 features is not worth £99 to me. I feel the box should be able to do more, at least the hardware I bought can do more.

I'm disappointed by the app selections on Android TV, they are all very basic TV apps, does not make full use of the box I just bought. Rooting it doesn't give me anything that's not already on the very limited TV appstore. It's no better than my jailbroken Apple TV 2! I thought there would be more useful backend stuff.

So how to make full use of Android TV? make full use of Shield Android TV's beefy Tegra X1 processor?

Could I run web server on it? What about Download clients? Always-on SSH daemon? Even just scheduled shell/python scripts? Is there anything like apt-get or ipkg or Cydia for Android TV?

(I use tweaked jailbroken iOS phone and tablet, my NAS has a lot of programs to do more than it was designed for. My desktop computer is rigged to match my roof solar panel to donate compute time when there's sun. Even my router been tasked with adblocking. I like to take full advantage of all hardware I bought)

Install Kodi on it and a build like Spinz.tv - you'll never look back.

Thanks for your suggestion. But Kodi (any variants) are limited to the single TV SHIELD is connected to. I've chosen Plex media server as my media backbone and use it to serve media for all screens.

I feel SHIELD is wasted sitting there while my aging NAS is always 70%+ loaded. Is there no way to off load server tasks from my NAS to the SHIELD? Both are a variant of Linux. Only limitation I can see is the Android TV being too stripped back, too locked down into the apps mentality.
