making complex selections

I am using cs3 and have a person on a neutral coloured seat and a not perfectly lit white background. How do I remove the background to replace it without fiddling with hair etc and keep the person on the seat? Is there a couple of simple steps? Looked online but could find anything very clear
 
might help if you post the picture up?

you might luck out and be able to mask it with channels, or if whoever is sitting doesent have blonde hair you might get away with a luma-key
 
Theres loads of ways of selecting something, but which is best depends on the image, channel masking might work but as said without seeing the image it's impossible to tell.
 
Right. Here is an image that I am having issues with as I find it difficult to select the background area without missing parts of her hair or including parts of her jumper or the throw... Help please as I have lots of these to do ! I dont want it bright white I have a background xmas scene I want to put behind. My process so far has been to open the background and drag the image onto it. Once they are aligned I have been using the eraser tool to bring the bg through but really struggle around the hair etc

Hi. You've made the problem more difficult by having the girl in a jumper almost the same tone as the background. A white bg when you shot it would have helped. Not a lot you can do to make it simple. Pen tool, may be, to make a selection, refine it with quick mask with a soft edged brush around the hair. Save the selection, so you can load it later and refine it if needed.
