i have no idea and i am not going to go hunting to find out i was just saying what the news did.

A couple of questions
Are there any breakdowns of how CRUK actually spend the money on research (as opposed to large salaries for some staff and on their fund raising activities).
If the research is funded by charitable money, why do drug companies charge so much for the new drugs, saying they need to reclaim their investment in research?

I think to be honest the drug companies don't do the same sort of research - they'll put their resources where its comercially viable, which tends to not be cutting edge cancer research. If CRUK finds something that actually works against cancer, the drug companies will then take it from there to market, but they won't fund the cutting edge research (or at least not to the same extent)

CRUK are a charity so their accounts must be lodged with the charity comission - in fact see here http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-us/how-we-are-run/annual-report-and-accounts

To be fair I have no beef with CRUK and no reason to believe they don't spend the money wisely ... my issue is with the " I has donated 3 quid I has cured cancer" Facebook muppets

Of course. Headlines are roughly 350M on "research" and 110M on salaries. But of course it's never that simple. Help yourself - http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/pro...ommon/@abt/@gen/documents/image/cr_111520.pdf (that's a fairly large PDF - have fun. No, I can't help you with the negative goodwill bit.)

I'm not going to comment on that except to say that GSK alone claim to spend £300,000 per hour on "research". The back of an envelope says that is about 7 - 8 times as much as CRUK. If you're really interested - http://www.gsk.com/content/dam/gsk/globals/documents/pdf/Annual-Report-2013.pdf

Sigh - I'm not talking about my freinds , nor do i suggest anyone is writing exactly that- honestly do we have to be so f*****g litteral

My point was the same one as on page 2 - there are a lot of numpties on facebook (and social meeja generally) who think that clicking 'like' is actually a positive action, its not - and even if you donated , well done , but three quid isnt going to cure cancer or change the world (and as Jon said even £2M collectively is a drop in the bucket for CRUKs accounts)

What CRuk actually need is for a percentage of people the campaign reached to realise this and continue to take positive ongoing action to raise money and spread their message for them. Some people will (you may be one i don't know and i'm certainly not saying you arent) but a hell of a lot of people will think that that click has salved their conscience and take no further action

Jesus Pete, you're like a dog with a bone.
Show us an example of someone who thinks their £3.00 has cured cancer or changed the world.
If everyone thought along the same lines as you, the world would be full of miserable, pedantic old farts with an overinflated estimation of their own self importance.
Do you seriously think that everyone who dotated did so to enable themselves to sleep a little better?
You really are a piece of work.

Unless enough people pledge to donate a fiver to CRUK (via shops or chuggers rather than the selfie schizzle), I shall post a naked selfie...

How many is enough ? * tries to work out if the sheer horror of such an image is worth enduring for the limitless potential for taking the pee out of Nod*

apparently i've adopted a polar bear

Try not to let it out in your garden as it will eat next doors cat - they are very fluffeh though so it will make an interesting alternative to a sofa

a) that wasnt what the campaign had in mind at the begining - when it wasnt really a campaign at all
b) Nor was it about raising awareness
c) not everyone liked being nominated - the fact that a lot of cash was raised doesnt mean these peoples feelings don't matter
d) there is a danger that this is a flash in the pan with people feeling they've really "done something" by donating £3 (of which CRUK got £2.40) - thats less than a penny a day.
a) whether it was the original intention or not, it has produced a fantastic result.
b) doesn't matter it won't detract from the good it will do
c) unfortunately there will always be someone somewhere who doesn't like something for whatever reason, no matter how much good has come out of it for others.
d) better to have raised some money rather than none at all

Thank you Mr kind Snake.. he has threatened me for years and avoided so far.....

Terri, "You've got male!"

Pathetic this whole bloody thread almost is completely and utterly pathetic and makes me wonder about some of the people on the forum, I love this place but honestly it's threads like this that some me want a divorce/separation it honestly makes me fall out of love with the forum...Christ some members have dared to suggest that the viral campaign is less than 100% wonderful and that is jumped on by a pack of rabid wolves like they have come into your home and left and steaming turd on your Axminster

right, you know what, I think its time this thread found its way into Room101 as some people are never going to agree on this subject and everyone has a different line in the sand about charity fund raising and opinions about what does/doesn't work, or should/shouldn't happen. Bottom line is, enough personal insults have been thrown around, enough feathers ruffled and enough high horses ridden upon from all sides.

Please go and have a nightcap or something.
