Yes as i said above - but I only have freinds who are freinds - so i'd think about their feelings before nominating them for something like this. - seems not everyone is as careful in picking freinds or a courteous
 
i only have real freinds on FB and a few people from here and we have a great laugh at my expense most of the time... but most of my friends are spread far and wide and it is away we can share and have a laugh...

Sorry Pete but you are.. call me what you will i will be the first to put my hand up and say i am a thick bint that must have dropped on my head as a baby... but i do not bully and i will not bully and i most certainly won't be bullied by anyone...
 
Thing is - and this is the bottom line for me - yes this raised a lot of money and that's great , but not everyone liked it.

Those that didnt have just as much right to say so as those who did - and I have to wonder how many more people there are ot there who don't like things like this, but keep their heads down because of the societal pressure to see these as a 'good thing' and the implicity moral blackmail that if you speak against them you are somehow speaking against kids with cancer.
 
If you have to wonder how many others don't like it then that says something doesn't it.......... if it was really that awful there would be much more of an up roar

No one said you were a bully terri - nor is anyone bullying you.

I'm not saying that everyone who sent this out was a bully - i'm saying that some people who received it didnt like it (or what happened next) vis Julies post and Fi's excellent blog - and I'd bet that they arent the only two - and that those peoples feelings matter.

Whatever - I give up , I thought it would be interesting to debate how we feel about different fund raising methods, but it seems that theres no possibility of having a sensible debate

I didn't say anyone was bullying me and i didn't say anyone said i was bullying them.. iI said a bit ago about those 2 ladies and yes they didn't need it but lighten up i doubt they are not the only 2 but others are able to press delete ot just not do it.

AS for friends i have made some good friends on here over they years some i have met some i am yet to meet and yes they are on my FB but i can count those on one hand. all the other are people that i "know" met have spent time with. ect.. but hay ho.....

this was about a selfie with no make up not a debate on different kinds of fund raising...

On the whole I suspect that a lot of them look better without make up - but we digress

Neknominate was indeed a stupid arse idea - but its interesting that the societal pressures to conform and to play (which led to people doing increasingly stupid things and eventually to deaths) are pretty similar

If I "nominated" you to drink a pint of scotch you'd just tell me to go forth and multiply (or that it wasn't time for your breakfast yet ;) ) and vice versa but some people are afraid of the social consequences of not conforming (peer pressure in other words) "If I don't drink a pint of spirits/ post a NMU selfie/ whatever then people won't think i'm cool and they might be mean to me/ not be my freinds "

Its been a long time since i gave a toss what the world at large thinks of me (as you can probably tell ;) ) but some people are more fragile , and using peer pressure to coerce those people into doing XYZ because someone else thinks they should is morally wrong , regardless of what the XYZ itself is

TBH I can see both sides of the argument.
Yes peer pressure does play a big part in social me-ja.
Sometimes good comes from it, sometimes it doesn't.

Seriously :bang: - the whole justification trotted out for the NMU selfie was that it was fund raising - I thought it might be interesting to see if that justification extended to other forms and where people draw the line - but unfortunately a minority seem inclined to just slate anyone who dares to suggest that the NMU selfie was anything other than brilliant.

If its not fundraising then we are back to the vacuous attention seeking (discussed about three pages earlier) - where basically some posters are secretly hoping people will say "oh you is like so brave / you look lush babe "

If it is fundraising then why is it different to other forms etc

Oh god .... it was to start with about making Women/ Girls aware... it then went on to donate... (which i did) and i was not brave i never wear make up i enjoy scaring little children and men alike. i also wasn't attention seeking.. if one woman thinks and checks her self or goes to the doctors, it was worth it hopefully a few more will have been made aware. and if the charity got some funds out of it then sorry in my book it is a win win situation..
But yea you will get a few that are as you say but i wouldn't know as i rarely have such shallow friends on my friends list, if they get on there they do not stay long.

An unbelievable jump from the £2M they were reporting this morning. Even if they do reclaim all the money from the polar bears.

indeed - but it would be nice if some people could express that contrary position in an adult manner - its also not a black or white answer so it would be interesting to hear views rather than "it was brilliant and anyone who says it wasnt is wrong"

£2M to that specific campaign - £8M in donations in general since the campaign started
 
no matter what i say you are going to pick holes in it is unprecedented that they get that much as fast.. but hay ho.. the news i heard was they had recieved £8 million nothing more or nothing less was said ..

Yes peer pressure is about... always has been always will be, there will be those that it bothers and some that it doesn't........ nobody can change that.....

but in the grand scheme of things it certainly wasn't/isn't a bad thing, ie the nek nom etc or daring someone to do something stupidly dangerous.....

Sigh - why are you taking this so personally terri , no one is having a go at you personally (unlike the various vicious things that have been said about me) - I agree its great that they've made £8m (which will allow them to run 10 clinical trials they were previously unable to fund) , no one is disputing that

The point i was was making were

a) that wasnt what the campaign had in mind at the begining - when it wasnt really a campaign at all
b) Nor was it about raising awareness
c) not everyone liked being nominated - the fact that a lot of cash was raised doesnt mean these peoples feelings don't matter
d) there is a danger that this is a flash in the pan with people feeling they've really "done something" by donating £3 (of which CRUK got £2.40) - thats less than a penny a day.
 
I can see why CRUK want to spin this as a success and I won't argue with their need to do that.

But they get an average of £1.25M from donations per day. Every day. (I worked that out by dividing the fundraising income stated in the 2012/3 accounts by 365 before anybody asks - I don't think it's a number they publicise that much.)

This has been an amazing campaign - but it won't register as a blip on next year's accounts.
 
You know what Pete i will bow down to your superior knowledge and wisdom, as i see you got the message and you were also nominated to to a picture (thankfully for the world you didn't)... as for the blooming political correctness brigade maybe if they shut the foo foo up..
 
i really am not bothered by the money i am more concerned about women and men come to think of it being aware, at least it is making people talk about it which as to be a good thing..

Indeed and the awareness will fizzle just as quickly - this time next month people will barely remember it at all , and some other meme will be the viral next big thing.

A couple of questions
Are there any breakdowns of how CRUK actually spend the money on research (as opposed to large salaries for some staff and on their fund raising activities).
If the research is funded by charitable money, why do drug companies charge so much for the new drugs, saying they need to reclaim their investment in research?
