Ladies - I commend you for your charitable donations :)

I commend you for raising awareness of a good cause :)

I commend you for being daft enough to go along with the make-up-less-ness fun of it all :)

But...

PLEASE STOP IT NOW - OR - PUT SOME BLOODY MAKE-UP ON !!!

It's perfectly acceptable to donate without horrifying the rest of humanity :D

Even more worrying, is that men are now taking selfies, with the wife's makeup on :eek:
 
That's a woman's logic for you, at least men grow a beard that makes them look a bit different whilst woman with out make up is like taking away the false advertising :wacky:

While many individuals (on my FB feed at least) are simply doing it for Facebook 'likes' as is the way with social media, I think the end result (i.e the money raised) is great.

I do think it's a nasty trait to 'brag' about charitable donations, but if that's what it takes to spread the word and end up with an extra £2million being raised for an extremely worthwhile cause, then it goes without saying that the minor annoyances littering my timeline are worth it for the 'greater good.'

is there anyone left on the planet who hasnt heard of cancer? i would imagine everyone on facebook has.. so who exactly are they trying to make aware?
 
My post above is a little too positive for my liking, to even it out a bit -

Defeating the purpose of the no-makeup aspect, a lot of girls seem to be (in a photographic sense):
  • Blowing the highlights massively / "high key lighting selfie" :lol:
  • 'Accidently' applying generous amounts of motion blur
  • Using the terrible iPhone front facing camera that lacks the capability of capturing anymore detail than the rough outline of facial features.
Those calling it 'courageous' and 'brave' to take these selfies really do need to get a reality check!

The whole awareness thing is ridiculous, as I mentioned above- the only positive side of this whole viral firestorm is the huge financial benefit Cancer Research have gained via a surge of donations.

Anyone that has been made aware of Cancer solely due to the no-makeup selfie on social media probably lacks the mental capacity required to use Facebook, thus another paradox was born.

I donated money but said I wasn't doing a selfie. I kept getting "nominated" so I mentioned it on Facebook. I got a reply along the lines of "the selfie is to raise awareness, you need to do it" I politely pointed out that i'm well aware of cancer having attended the funeral of my 39 year old cousin, last month, where I also donated money to cancer research.

To be honest, in my opinion, after a few hours of being up on Facebook I felt people were bullying.
 
Cancer is a horrible disease that causes much suffering and distress, whatever works to raise awareness and funding is okay by me {okay plus I have no idea what the original post is all about [missing shrug smiley]}
 
Kipax, we're talking about cancer not man-flu, your flippant remarks do nothing to enhance your credibility!
Everyone needs to be made aware, the types of cancer, how to check for it, how to help prevent it etc and especially how to promote and assist funding for research.

absoloutly 10% agree... now if you can kindly explain how girls/women showing a picture of themselves without makeup ..on facebook does any of that and I will take back all my flippancy

haha... so ...no idea then.. no answers to the questions.. important subject like this and the best you an do is.. whatever... ... perhaps someone else will be along to offer how awareness of how to find and prevent cancer rather than being happy wiht constantly telling everyone it exists..

the point your missing gramps... we know cancer exists..we know its bad.. we dont need making aware of that... taking pictures of yourself without making doesnt change or help any of that... somehting pointing out what types and how to check then yes thats great.. simply making people aware that cancer exists is rubissh.. we all know it does..

we know cancer exists... IMPORTANT donate..IMPORTANT make people aware of how to check for types of cancer and what can be done.... NOT IMPORTANT letting people know it exists..

I believe this particular campaign was sparked by a young girl dying of cervical cancer. Although this particular girl was under the age for testing I believe people are raising awareness for the need to get regular checks and/or for the testing age to be lowered.

Much the same that there are many campaigns to raise awareness that men should check themselves for testicular cancer or get checked for prostate cancer.

Can some member(s) stop being pedantic now?

Anything that raises awareness of Cancer, no matter how silly or pointless the activity may seem to some, should be commended, and if it raises funds for research then even better.

Cancer is not one disease, and I believe there are over 100 different types. Are we all aware of all of them, and how they manifest themselves, I very much doubt it.

Prostate Cancer is now the most common Cancer in men, yet many men don't even know what the Prostate is, where it is, or what the symptoms of Prostate Cancer are. How many men over 40, bother to a get a PSA test?.

Any Cancer is most certainly not to be taken lightly, as it is a potential killer, and destroyer of families.

I lost my father to Stomach Cancer, and just last year I lost my elder brother to Leukemia. Just over a year ago, I was diagnosed with early Prostate Cancer. Fortunately, due to having regular PSA tests over the past few years, when it did start, it was caught very early on.

I went through 7.5 weeks of Radio Therapy, and hopefully it will have done the job, but nothing in this life is certain.

So, please don't mock people that do things to raise awareness of Cancer, and funds for research into this wicked disease, no matter how silly their actions may seem to you. You might one day be glad of that research.

If you find their fund raising activities annoying, then don't bother to look at them.

You can of course still put your hand in your pocket and donate to Cancer Research UK, irrespective of any fund raising activity.

**Insult removed** there are young Girls on FB that are not aware and people who stick their heads in the sand i know this from experience..

Sorry but it i think it was a good idea not only did it make people think it also raised a fair bit of money... but hey let us lesser mortals take note of the higher beings that know better

There was a 19 year old lass who died last week.... how many women miss their smear tests and come on guys.. tell us how often do you check yourselves? ffs any message is good and if you do not like it all over your FB feed you can block it.

Have you missed my point?

It was made in relation to the awareness of cancer of as a disease.

How on earth are the selfies encouraging smear tests? I agree such promotion on these topics is urgently needed. I have not seen a single mention on any of the selfie posts regarding preventive or early discovery related methods.

This selfie business is a money raising tool and not serving to promote any information that could actually make a difference.

To clarify:

Promotion of information that can make a difference and potentially save lives = good

Promotion of "cancer exists" = superfluous

Selfies raising large sums of money for Cancer Research = good




With the greatest of respect, I think you've completely misinterpreted my post. I can assure you my intention was in no way to play down the importance of regular checks and tests.

In my experience a lot of girls look better with no make up

That aside this whole FB thing reminds me of the "how stupid people think FB works" meme - lots of likes does not equate to curing cancer or money raised , it just equates to lots of likes

Terri, the fact this key point has not been mentioned once says a lot about what kind of awareness this no-makeup selfie business is and isn't raising. Not saying that somewhere on the internet it hasn't been mentioned, the fact is it's been grossly overshadowed.

The fact that you know what the selfies are in aid of, means it works, it's raising money and if it causes one person to remember to check for lumps and catch cancer in time to do something about it, it has done a good job. Just the same as cocks in socks is doing for testicular cancer.

My betting is that there's not a man on this thread who hasn't felt his testicles in the last 24 hours - okay so most of them probably weren't actually motivated by checking for cancer...
 
You know you all go on about the likes but what you're failing to see is if someone likes someone else's post, not on your own friends list, quite often it shows in your feed, hence another person seeing it thinking hell I'll do that it's all for a good cause etc etc.. It snowballs, hence the money being raised

Honestly the more threads I open here lately the more disappointed I get with the attitude/bitching etc :(

i have just seen an advert on TV about wearing Pink and gorillas now i wonder how much that cost to make and how many people it reached.. how much did a little facebook "lark" help to raise in money and awareness? and all for b****r all...

It is 5 years since Jade Goodie passed away and after that the take up of smear tests rose by over 400,000 it has now gone back to below before she passed.. Anything that makes people think men and women i need to make that appointment or check myself is good regardless where the heck it comes from..

But it doesn't. I didn't know the campaign revolved around this until Terri just told me.

I already knew of the importance of smear tests.

Assuming of course that the person who sees it actually donates. Also The same could be achieved by sharing a message saying please donate to cancer research uk without the selfie.

The point about likes though is too often there's a 'like this to end word hunger / save the rainforest/ stop child neglect / conserve the womble or whatever and lots of (stupid) people like it thinking they are actually achieving something - wheras even if a million people "like" the message - b****r all is actually achieved to end word hunger/save the rainforest/ stop child neglect/ or save the womble

Well obviously a hell of a lot are donating hence the amount raised!

At the end of the day regardless of 'what' it is, money is being raised and that has only got to be a good thing!
