Magnum have just launched their brand new shop http://store.magnumphotos.com/pages/magnum-prints and whilst browsing the offerings I came across the contact sheet for Elliott Erwitt's New York Chihuahua shot http://store.magnumphotos.com/colle...sheet-print-chihuahua-new-york-elliott-erwitt and although I'm not that surprised but it is very interesting to see the progress of the image capture, I think it's particularly telling that the most famous image from this set is actually a very small crop of the woman's feet and the dog.

Very interesting find Nick. I am not surprised, post processing in the pre digital era was very much part of the getting and enduring image, just a different set of techniques. Myths about purism and capturing the final shot at the first go are exactly that , myths! Thanks for sharing.

That is a surprisingly tiny crop, though. Was it a medium-format original, or something bigger, do we know?

6x6

I'm kinda struggling with contact sheets, I can't figure out the value in them, I mean a 6x6 contact is the same size as the neg, apart from the reversal........what's the point ??

The reversal is the point, innit. A quick way to find out which negs should be printed properly.

I reckon that crop is about 35mm, I dunno where I stand on the ethics of that, do we berate him for being utterly wasteful, for shooting a speculator and only finding a picture when it was contacted, or for not getting close enough ?

I caught two Magnum exhibitions in Budapest back in September. The 'Magnum Contacts' at the Robert Capa Centre and 'Magnum's First' at the Mai Mano House. It was overwhelming to see the contacts and prints of some of the most iconic photos of all time. I ordered a copy of the Contacts book while I was there so it was here by the time I flew home :-)

isn't there a contact sheet of cateriers shot of the guy riding the bike?
