Hello!

Just brought a maglite 4d for £23 and im aware there is an led bulb upgrade for £14 which is 180 lumens. Does anyone have this torch and is it worth getting the upgrade bulb? A few of my mates use lenser torches for light painting and recommend them but ive heard good things about maglite torches but im not sure what there like for light painting.

I did have a little go and it seems kind of hard to balance the light when light painting something. As if its to powerful and you see the lines you have drawn to light up the subject. This might be because I did a quick test in my bedroom.

Thanks

I nearly brought a P7 then my mate got a P14 which looked good but I didn't really want to spend so much on a torch as im hoping to get a 10-20mm sigma soon which won't be cheap. I think the maglite 4D I have said 75 lumens on the package so I will probably get the LED upgrade bulb :)

I have the 6 D cell maglight with a Terralux LED upgrade and to be honest - it aint that good!
The beam is too tight to be of any real use. It makes it a very powerful torch but I never use it because the spot is way too small. I have a LED Lenser P7, P14, M3 and a few others and all of these are much more use and much smaller than my Mag with LED.
I would go for the P7 by LED Lenser any day though. Mine has been down old mines and tunnels, asylums, plane boneyards and graveyards and never lets me down:)

EDIT :- The mag with led upgrade will be useless for light painting as the beam will be way too tight and you lose a lot of the focusability (mine did anyway)

I would agree with Julian, I have the 4C maglight with terralux LED and while it is an excellent torch the spot it throws is very tight. It wouldnt be very good at light painting at all.

I used to use a tunsten Maglite for light painting quite a bit, it gives much more pleasing colour to be honest, LED tends to be a tad blue. Having said that I can't be bothered carrying a D cell maglite anymore and just use various Lensers instead :)
