Hi,

Trying to decide between buying a magic trackpad and a magic mouse for my mac pro. Main use is lightroom and a little photoshop. Of course I use it for browsing etc too but I want to buy the input device that makes most sense for photographers. Anyone have an opinion?

Thanks in advance

browsing = touchpad

but definitely not for photo work. Touchpads get a little tedious when you have to do a lot of clicking,

I much prefer the touchpad, but i dont do much editing. I find the magic mouse far too small, and somewhat rsi inducing for work that involves a lot of mouse movement. I'd suggest a different mouse brand. Plenty of other manufacturers make bluetooth mice.

The magic mouse is total crap IMHO, all that finger wiggling and swiping , when all I want to do is press a button.
Used mine for less than half a day before putting a proper mouse on my Mac, it's no good for normal everyday use nevermind photo editing.

OK so carry on using my existing wireless mouse (logitech) and use trackpad gestures and for some stuff sounds like a good plan. Hope they can be used at the same time (other mouse is usb connected base station + radio connected mouse).

disagree, love the magic mouse, it's worth it just for the scrolling up and down without the need for one of those horrible scroll balls or wheels

Never tried either of the magic's but I love my 5 button optical intellimouse. Can do 90% of what I want with it without moving my fingers more than is needed to depress a switch ;)

once you've scrolled up and down on a magic mouse across the surface no amount of buttons ever makes up for having to use a track wheel!!! :D

Depends... I use my track wheel for more than scrolling (I NEVER flick scroll). It is also an extra button (which is the main use I have for it). I use all 5 buttons of my mouse a lot (middle button opens all the forums I'm interested in TP for instance) and the two side buttons are used to flick between my 3 different workspaces.

How do you do 5 mouse buttons on a magic mouse?

consensus seems to be go for the trackpad at the various places i have asked. Seems to have more gestures and is better suited for lion consequently?

basically you set up magic prefs and you can have up to 24 different actions on the mouse,

clicks, taps, swipes, you can even set the area within which it becomes responsive to touches.

I am a keyboard shortcut man myself so I just have the right and left click setup as well as a four finger click for dashboard. I actually try and do everything i can without even touching a mouse

i do find the gestures better on the trackpad because of it's weight. Swiping left and right on a magic mouse with 2 fingers is fine but three and it's not really big enough, its a bit awkward. the trackpad is heavier and bigger so it works better.

nothing to do with the number of gesture though, i can add the same gestures to both devices

I think you have hit the nail on the head there. Apples mice are crap because Apple belive everyone uses keyboard shortcut.

I don't think your really supposed to use the magic mouse for much more than point click and page scrolling.

Hmm... having looked into it a bit more, I don't like the look of it. Too much of a multi-touch trackpad sat ontop of a mouse IMHO. Nothing to rest the cup of your hand over (I have big hands). The videos I've seen of it in use would give me aching wrists after a while (please bear in mind I'm at a PC all day, almost every day).

Apart from moving my index finger from the left click button to the centre wheel, I don't move my fingers at all on the mouse (other than to depress the buttons ;)).

I dont think they are crap, i've yet to hold a mouse i like better than the magic mouse, the scroll is just delicious

im at my computer all day everyday too, i use combination of keyboard, trackpad and mouse all day. Ergonomics are a funny thing, whats good for one is poo for another!
