Magazines that aren't all about equipment basics?

Hi folks,

I usually walk straight past photography magazines as I find the covers cringeworthy ('What camera settings you really need to know!', 'Why YOU need to think about light!', 'How to get perfect exposures!' etc).

I made the mistake of buying Practical Photography today and sure enough it lived up to my expectations of being all about the basics of equipment.

Does anybody know of any magazines which are about the art instead?

Ideally what I'd like is 50 pages of good photos, with a few lines about where and when on each. Maybe if the 'how' part isn't obvious they could touch on that briefly.

Does such a thing exist?

Sorry to hijack your thread heres a couple of mags for you ifa canon user Photoplus if not Digital Photo both monthly Ibought a mag off the shelf from asda last month Digital slr photography cost £7.99 but I think good value

digital SLR user is a brilliant mag because it shows you the "how to" however it does it different it also has decent articles one as such shown how to get the most from a prime lens and it shown you what a 50mm lens was capable of, thats the sort of stuff i like.
 
I'd be interested in looking at the links that people have provided, but I no longer buy the 'Available in the High St store' mags anymore.

I prefer stuf on the net. This forum, other forums, google and youtube plus other websites, free and paid for, I find there is plenty of info without spending additional money on mags.

If you are a complete newbie, than a years subsciption to something lile Pratical Photography isn't a bad thing, but after that they repeat each subject year after year, just with different pics.

PP has a website called Photo Answers (believe this is what it was called in pre-digital times) Lots of little video tutorial clips!

I miss having Digital Photo purely for it's DVD with PS tutorials, but then again these are available on the net in some form or other. And many of the processes are repeated, again with just a different picture and perhaps another presenter.

These magazines are great for newbies in their first year, but after that the internet is cheaper!
 
I think you'll be hard pushed to find a mag that regularly and consistently fits your requirements. Too many of them regurgitate over and over the same beginners stuff and leave the more advanced user high and dry.

Digital Photographer used to be quite good, and is less beginner-orientated than most. But even this one has dumbed down over the past year or two, and has been hit with complaints from long term readers including myself. I wrote a bitterly scathing email to them last year when they devoted half a page to answering a reader enquiry describing what a particular button did on a specific DSLR. Something that could have been found out by looking in the user manual.
 
A vote from me, as ever, for the British Journal of Photography (get a sub and it becomes pretty decent value for the quality and content) and Black & White Photography.

You don't say where you are but if you're near central Londonn any time then the Photographers' Gallery shop (nr Oxford Circus) has an excellent stock of magazines.
 
I haven't bought a photography mag for a while because I feel they're just spouting the same things I can look up on google

i gave up on mags as got sick of reading the same thing every month. will give one of these a try
