Macro with point and shoot camera

I would like to get into macro photography, but initially i have no money to buy a DSLR camera, so want to see what i can achieve with a point and shoot camera. My camera will focus at 3cm from the object, but i could borrow one that will focus at 1cm.

What will i gain from the 1cm?

If the 3cm camera has more megapixels will this negate the benefit of being able to get closer?
 
It will all depend on what sort of macro you are looking at doing. even at 3cm you will not get close to bugs as they will be off before you got that close so the 1cm one will not better you in that respect.

I say have a go with the one you have and see what sort of results you are getting for the type of macro you want to do.

I use a canon 100mm macro and even then I struggle at times to get close to bugs to photo them as they fly off, and this is from say 300mm away so 3cm is 10 times closer.
 
Initially i will have to shoot non moving objects mainly for the reasons you state (bugs fly off as soon as they are ware of a moving camera nearby) eg flowers, water droplets
 
I sometimes shoot very close ups, with a Canon G11, P&S, and it can be pretty good, mainly because of all the DOF a 6mm lens gives you, not to mention a flip out screen making life a bit easier.

All these, hand held in available light, examples have been cropped.

#2 Probably near minimum focussing distance. These guys appear to love sucking nectar from the flowers.

Richard two really good examples- well d0me :thumbs:

I own a Nikon P7700 & Canon G15 so your shots give me encouragement as to what could be achieved.
