A friend of mine is after a compact that is very good for macro photographs. He needs to photograph fungi!

Can any of you good people offer any suggestion’s please?
;)

Wow! Thanks Martin, great shot's.

A flip out screen is useful for low level shots. I've used a Nikon P7800 for close ups of various things. I've heard good reports of Panasonic compacts and bridge cameras fro close ups too.

Many thanks guys, I do appreciate the feedback, cheers ;)

Must agree with the flip out screen, invaluable for macro stuff, my Panasonic Lumix TZ 55 has flip out screen, 16MP and 2 macro modes, close and even closer! Can definitely recommend it, has 20 x optical zoom too, my dad just bought one when he saw mine. Only about £100 now, bargain.

Fungi are usually close-ups rather than true macro, a lot of (if not most) compacts are competent at this. A lot of phone cameras will do for a record/identification shot (it depends what sort of "need" your friend has).

Is he wanting a compact because they are small and easy to carry? or because he thinks they're cheap? or because he thinks they're easier to use? - what his expectations are could make a difference here.

Thanks again all :)

Fungi are photographed to identify any diseases, used for work in the grounds maintenance field. Not really requiring full on macro!

I like the Lumix TZ 55 Adrian, I'l pass on the info, thanks.

The Olympus TG-3 (and I guess TG-4) has both macro and microscope settings that are pretty good, although you are paying for the tough/waterproof features that perhaps you don't need. Other Olympus compacts may have similar features but I couldn't comment.
