I would like to have a go at Macro and wonder what lens for my 7D Mk II would be best? Don't want to spend a fortune just yet though.

Also, do I need a ring flash for close up insects, spiders etc. Thanks.

You might do better asking the Mods if they can move this to the Macro Forum

You don't need to spend a lot if you just want a dabble to see how it goes - suggest purchase a Raynox DCR-150 or 250 and stick it on your 24-105. Any decent flash will do (with a home-made diffuser to give a nice light) :)

Thanks Mike. From what I can see the Raynox DCR just clips onto the front of the lens and you have Macro capability?

Yep - simple as that. They are remarkably effective considering the cost and for me are less faff than tubes. They clip straight on to lenses with filter size 52-67 so you'll need a step down ring for your 24-105 which is 77mm I think.

At 105 with a Raynox 150 you'll get just under 1:1 with a 250 you'll get about 1.3:1 - for biggish stuff the 150 should be plenty :)

This was shot with a 100mm + a Raynox 150:

I recently was playing with canon EF 35-80mm that I picked up for £25 macro modded - http://www.verybiglobo.com/cheap-macro-lens-with-af-canon-ef-35-80mm-f4-5-6-only-three-screws-away/
Used it with the kit flash (basically equivalent to pop-up flash) and a DiY diffuser.

My initial £25 results :D

Thanks Mike. I was wondering how to get from the 77mm to 67mm. Fantastic picture by the way, I would be very happy if I could achieve that.
