any suggestions for a good Macro tripod, sturdy is more important than light weight, I have the Manfrotto slider to mount but it is a backwards and forwards slider only so a tripod with a geared head for side to side would be great.

using with the mp-e65 & ring flash on a canon 450 body so fairly weighty plus once extended over balances my current manfrotto 785b which with the quick release ball head system sucks for macro.

I'd personally recommend the RedSnapper RS-283 legs and RSH-12 ball head combo, rock solid, 2 center columns (long and short plus they're both reversible), carry bag and will easily hold 8Kg. £99 but you get a 10% discount of you're a TP member...

thanks guys, looked at all you mentioned, the flexibility of the Octopus really appealed but ended up with this http://www.vanguardworld.com/index.php/en/products/photo-video/detail-1-4-15-89.html which came as a complete kit including a ball head, two mounting plates and carry bag for £120.

been using this afternoon and its incredible the places you can get the camera into, has great quick release latches and is a solid as a rock.

thanks for pointing me in the right direction

I guess you bought a used one as I can't see it new for that price!

If I'm wrong please let me know where you bought it!

nope, brand new from my local who still had it left over from January sale, amazing seeing as everything here is normaly twice the cost (France)

they had a Carbon version at 250 euros (about £220) but thought that a tad excessive for my needs.

spent the day with it yesterday and I could not fault it, very pleased.

Thanks Somelier, still not as good a price as kerniki's! Put's it into Manfrotto 190XPROB territory.

kerniki, did you compare the Vanguard to the Manfrotto?

f1- yes i did, sat right next to it in the shop, big difference for me was the infinitely adjustable centre column which can be angled anywhere between upright and horizontal with a fantastic fast lever action fastner for angle with the column being on thumb screw slider, were as the Manfrotto column was only upright or horizontal, this makes the Vanguard much better for Macro.

Qulaity I'd say the Vanguard edges Manfrotto as well with price ALOT less (for mine anyway)

HTH

Thanks for that kerniki. I was thinking of getting the Manfrotto, may have to rethink.

Sounds like you got a real bargain there - wish I could get lucky like that!
