I am wanting to get into Macro shoots.

But how far away are you guys when taking these macro shoots as i cant believe how good and clear they are.

I have a canon 400d and want to get a macro lenses for it but not too high on prices.

What suggestions is there

Cheers

Sigma 105 EX DG is worth a look.

As for distance it depends on the lens. A 100mm will gice you more space than a 50mm.

The 105 gives you about 5-6 inches at 1:1.

How much can that be got for and where from as i only found it for about £250

Thats about what I paid for it a year ago. It's a bloody cracker of a lens. If you are on a tight budget you could try extention tubes or lens attachments but the IQ is not so good and they have their limitations.

The sigma 105mm focus point is 31.3cm at 1:1 - thats from the sensor plane to the object and not the end of the lens, and with a full set of tubes its even less........

So I guess you can nearly touch the object then ha ha.... Hmm now i need to find it cheap hmmm 2nd hand mayber?

Whats yer budget??

I can possibly buy something at £250 if the mrs let me ;)

But Extension tubes i believe are not too good and require manuel focus is that right

Right if you can afford £250 (sod the Mrs;):D) get the 105, you'll not be dissapointed.

manual focus is all you will use on macro anyway. the best way i have found is to get focus and rock back and forth to fine tune, a monopod can help but i get on with mine, some peeps dont. i have kenko tubes and only tend to use the 36mm. no problems with them.

So with any macro shoots we never use Auto Focus then

Where did you get your kenko tubes from dont fancy buying from Hong Kong

didn't say never, but as you get more into it you will prob go manual. i never use autofocus now, possibly except for longer range stuff, i.e. dragonfly's and butterfly's

You will find you'll manual focus most of the time - buy moving the camera even with a autofocus macro lens. I use tubes with my 105mm when i want better than 1:1 - but you will start to lose light - quality is not affected as there's no glass to interfere with the light.

I'm the same as animal, I set it at 1:1 for the real close up stuff like bugs etc, and move back and forth until I get the focus. It's a real challenge outside on a windy day th0:D

Ok folks thank you for your kind help

If I bough tubes for my 50mm Prime I guess it will be ok but wont be 1:1? Can someone post a example of tube doing some macro just on a normal lens

Cheers :) No rush ;)

I've borrowed the Raynox filter off of hammerhead64 (cheers) for a few days and its really good. Its worth the money to see if you will enjoy doing the macro work.

I think 50mm of tubes and the 50mm will give you 1:1 - i don't have any examples as i don't use a nifty.

this was taken with the sigma 105 & full set of tubes

I really love that photo i just cant believe what detials you can get in macro... Really need to get into it.

People keep saying stick to canon if have canon camera

Is flash being use on these macro? dont tell me i got to buy a flash gun too

Would the flash not scare them away. Even if I was outdoor would i need flash? Would the flash on the 400d not be any good?

what type of macro flash..... I really am interested in doing macro and want to get and do the right thing. I may get out the naughty plastic card ;)

For the 105, I have the Sigma EM-140 ring flash, about £200;)

Your that close to the subject the on-board flash isn't really effective your best using a ring flash or canons version of

i must type faster:D

The Canon (MT 24) version of this is cool but about twice the price of the Sigma 140. You will get cheaper ring flashes for about £100 th0. Dunno how good the are. Check ebay for ideas then research reviews etc.

Am still undecided what to do.... Sigma 105mm Or canon 100mm as went instore yesterday to play with them. The canon seem faster whilst the sigma being slower is this normal? But the price of the canon is off putting but should the end result be the same on both

What do you mean by slower?

I don't think there is a lot of difference on iq between them. You have seen what the 105 can do. Here's another couple without tubes, with the EM 140 flash
