Do you own or have used a MP-E65 f/2.8 1-5 x Macro
For what I've read it is a bit difficult to use it.....(lots of practise)....what do yu think....:)

I've got one and it does take a fair bit of practice to get profficient with it. I wouldn't recommend it as a starter macro lens....better to work at 1:1 with a 90-100-105mm lens, then add some extension tubes to go towwards 2:1 before graduating onto the MP-E.

It's also a lens that needs flash in most scenarios, so better to factor in the cost of a twin-light, ringflash or bracket system.

Once you get the hang of it then it really is the ultimate macro rig but I think going in unprepared could lead to a lot of frustration.

Thanks so much Bob....appreciated...
I have got a sigma 105mm and will try and get a extention tube......which one would you suggest? (I don't know anything about them)

thanks again

I have the kenko extension tubes and find them pretty good, make sure you get auto tubes so you still have lens functions as the cheap e-bay ones don't. As Bob says the MP-e 65 isn't the easiest lens to get to grips with and when you go above 3x it all start to get dark and difficult to hold focus. I agree with Bob get some macro under your belt first and if you're hooked by it then move up to the MP-e 65. ;)

As Alby says...Kenko DG are the best value for money (make sure you specify that they're for Canon as they make the same product for Nikon mount etc)

Many thanks guys!!!!!!!!!

Check out Lord V on Flickr for an excellent flash diffuser made from a couple of old coke cans and tissue paper. Cost's next to nothing and gives better results than most alternatives including expensive stuff.
