Hello one and all.

I am looking at buying a macro lens within the next month or so and wondered if anyone could give me some feedback.

I have a canon 500d which at present does everything I need it to. I've been using a raynox DCR 250 lens with some decent results but now wish to buy a dedicated lens.

As its only a hobby I don't want to spend a massive sum on this lens and have been looking at the Tokina or Tamron. Both sit within my price range and seem to have good reviews.

If it were you which would you buy and why? On paper to me they appear very similar to me (although my knowledge is limited) so any ideas?

Appreciate any help or advice.
 
I liked the IQ of the tamron when I had it but sold it quickly due to the focus speed which was horrendous and meant it is a lens exclusive to macro.

In contrast I was over the moon with my Nikon 105mm VR which I used for portraits, macro and sports! I believe canon has a macro lens that has fast focus when not in macro distance too.

You will be shooting macro in manual most likely but my advice is to think before buying. If you want a dedicated macro lens that will be used exclusively for that fine, if you want a sharp, fast medium tele for other use...have a look around!
 
Definitely have a look at the canon f2.8 100mm macro. Super super sharp, and doubles as a great portrait lens. Can be had for a little under £300 2nd hand these days. Great performance for the price.
 
I'd opt for the Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro lens- I use one its brilliant and not that expensive second hand
