1:1 is lifesize meaning it your sensor is 25mm accross and you take a picture of a tape measure the image will show 25mm across the image, if it 1:2 the image will show 50mm and 2:1 will show 12.5mm. hope that helps.![]()

As Alby states...if the image shows 50mm worth of tape measure (on a 25mm wide sensor) then the image is half life size. If you only see 12.5mm of tape then you must be twice life size.
Put another way...if you're seeing less tape measure then you must be magnifying more.
