Macro lens question - What does the 1:4, 1:1 thing mean?

Well as the title says really what do those figures mean and which is better?
 
1:1 is lifesize meaning it your sensor is 25mm accross and you take a picture of a tape measure the image will show 25mm across the image, if it 1:2 the image will show 50mm and 2:1 will show 12.5mm. hope that helps. ;)

Alby have you got that the wrong way around :thinking: shouldn't it be

1:1 = 25mm
1:2 =12.5mm
2:1 = 50mm
 
As Alby states...if the image shows 50mm worth of tape measure (on a 25mm wide sensor) then the image is half life size. If you only see 12.5mm of tape then you must be twice life size.

Put another way...if you're seeing less tape measure then you must be magnifying more.

:bonk::bonk: must engage brain before typing..... i get it now- at 1:1 i'll see 25mm of tape and i'll see 50mm at 1:2 as its half size thus fits twice as much of the tape on the sensor, and at 2:1 its twice as big so i'll only fit half of the original 25mm on the sensor ie 12.5mm. sorry for the confusion on my part....:nuts:
