Yes
can anyone recommend a reasonably priced decent macro lens for the d3100? for water doplet photography, insects etc..I heard the Tamrom 90mm is ideal?

also after a good telephoto lens?

budget around £300-£400 each, so £800 total. :)

That's a pretty generous budget.

If you want to shoot insects, I'd say 90mm is only just ok. I'd personally take a look at a used Sigma 150mm HSM. You should find one for £350 or so. For a telephoto, I'm a huge fan of the Nikon 70-300 VR but what would you like to use it for?

The Tamron 90mm is a great lens, I've had one for years, and it's well known as a pin sharp lens that competes well above it's price bracket.

However be careful as there are two versions both with model number 272E. One with an auto-focus motor, one without. Obviously the one without won't auto-focus on your camera.

well the telephoto will be used in my upcoming 3 week trip to vietnam and cambodia, we are visiting angkor *** and the surrounding temples, aswell as a lot of other historical sights. I also work offshore so being able to capture the rigs sometimes can be tricky if we arent close enough.

The tamron sounds good, noted about the model numbers, ill keep my eyes open. Ill have a look into the siggy lens once i get some free time. Im on the ship at the moment. Home in 12 days so i can play around then some more! Only so much water you can photograph before it becomes tedious! lol

As for the telephoto, I really like the AF-S 55-300mm and only cost me £220.00 on Amazon (although it was a US import so no warranty on it but I have insurance anyway).

I've got the Nikon 70-300 VR. Its a great lens, I'd recommend it.

I'd be interested to see your shots if you go for the Tamron as I'm thinking about a macro lens too

Macro:
60mm nikon (bit too close tho)
105mm nikkor micro f2.8 (d version is probably in the range you mentioned, but is manual (as you don't have a screww drive) - vr may be better?)

90mm Tamron
105mm Sigma (close)
150mm sigma (bit further away)
180mm sigma (even further away)

The longer the mm the further away from the subject you can get - ie insects that fly off if you get too close

There is also a canon lens - mpe summat. But I think it blows your budget and is probably manual... Search the forum or flickr for posts/pics.

Telephoto:
Ah well I don't have one (Zoom). On a minolta 5d I did have a 70-300, but I find that the iq is a bit soft.
The only telephoto I have is the 300 f4.5 tair 3a m42 lens. coupled with a 2x ...
Perhaps a sigma 50-500 or 150-500?

Best thing would be find a store that stocks them and put them on. They may let you stand in front of the store to try the lens outside...

Just weighing in with another +1 for the tamron 90mm, it's a peach of a lens .. Also have the 70-300 VR which I would also recommend, gets a bit soft at 300mm but for the price can't go wrong

Get a used Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM mkII for telephoto. Can get one used for around £400-£450.

Then blow the rest on a macro lens.
