Should be receving my Canon 5D3 in the next couple of days and id like to get a macro lens. Ive a 17-40 L and although its very good close up, id like something more.
Any sugestions?...

The 100mm f/2.8L IS is a fantastic macro lens and doubles up as a great portrait lens too:thumbs:

With the full frame 5D3 you may appreciate the extra focal length of the Sigma 150mm OS. Gives 1:1 like the Canon 100mm L but from a more comportable distance.

El cheapo option: A Canon FD 50mm f/3.5 Macro can be had for £50 upward if you're lucky. The FD 100mm macro goes for about £70 up. Budget about £15 for an optics-free FD to EF adapter.

You won't have infinity focus, AF or electronic control of the aperture, but it probably won't make so much difference with macro. Switch to live view on the 5D3 and the job's a good 'un.

This months Practical Photography has a feature on macro lenses. Their "best in test" went to the Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM. Best independent was Sigma 105 f2.8 EX DG OS HSM (other combinations of abbreviations are available)

Depends on budget as others have said

If you are not shooting bugs (you'll need 100mm as a minimum) then on the low cost side, the Sigma 50mm Macro is a great lens, my daughter has one - she likes shooting still life / flowers etc and gets great shots with it

I've got a 100mm L macro and it's an absolute belter of a lens. I did venture into MP-E65 territory at one point, and even contemplated selling the 100, but my health being what it is (my backs bu@@ered) I couldn't get into the positions needed to take advantage of such a lens. I'm so glad I stuck with the 100 though, it's fantastic.

I have a Tamron 90 with my 7D and it does give sharp macro photos and is no where near as expensive as the Canon 100. However I really cannot get to grips with macro photography. Whatever lens you use the depth of field is too shallow for my taste. Even with small bugs and spiders if the head is in focus the body is not. Can make for some really good photos when you get it right but in my case that is about 1 in 10.
