Have a Lumix TZ8 and am getting very confused with macro. At the mo all my attempts are blurring the foreground and sharpening the background. Obviously i want the reverse. What am i doing wrong.

When i view the LCD it looks ok, when i press the button to focus the above happens

are you using auto focus?? If so then dont- use manual focusing and you can then select the area you wish to be in focus, ie the subject and NOT the back ground

like this; focus is on the insect and not the BG

Oh welcome to the forum by the way

Can you even do manual focus on a TZ8? Not used one myself.

Is it possible that you're trying to get to close to your subject and that subject ends up in front of the minimum distance that the lens can focus to? Doesn't quite tally with it looking ok on live view but maybe worth moving back a short distance and see if things improve.

Thanks for the welcome!

i wonder if i am getting to close, i am going in close to fill the photo. Would i use the zoom instead?

not sure if i can use manual focus, i'll check my manual

According to this link

http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/panasonic_lumix_dmc_tz8_review/image_quality/

you should be able to focus on something 3cm in front of the lens with the lens at it's widest (fully zoomed out) and using macro mode. Anything closer than that is going to be blurred.

Also, look for an area of contrast on your subject to help the AF lock on. With the camera so close to the subject you will likely be casting a shadow on it and the AF will struggle. If it can see a bit of contrast somewhere it will help somewhat.
