macro flash question

Hi all,

I am looking for something to help my macro shots. I was planning on getting a mount and modifying it like this:

Now I have a sony A200 and I was wondering if someone could explain what specifics I would be looking for in the following:

- I want to use a normal hotshoe flash and will therefore require a cord which changes the sony shoe into a normal shoe

- I don't want to spend much on a flash at all, so what are the disadvantages of the cheap ones on ebay?

All this brackets etc stuff. The easiest way of course is to have a small external flash that can be placed anywhere in the vincinity of the subject. I made a front flash consisting of two flash tubes level with the front of the lens. For moving around the subject another two flash tubes mounted on a plastic board with diffusers to soften the light. The power for these is a seperate power pack.
 
Best option for macro is a ring flash - sometimes supplemented by another off csmera flash.
'I don't want to spend much' and advice as to the best way to do it conflict!
 
Thanks for the link, some of the homemade ring flashes on the first page look good - might try some out :D
