I'm thinking of purchasing 52mm macro filters rather than go the expensive route of a dedicated macro lens. Any suggestions?

Why not consider a reversing ring, which turns around your kit lens - ie- its fitted backwards- much better than a bolt on filter, in my opinion

Hi, You could try a set of extension tubes. These will give you varying degrees of magnification, should work with any lens that is compatible with your camera, will be meter coupled, and will give you better quality than close up filters. And are a lot cheaper than a dedicated Macro lens. Hope this helps.

Try Raynox macro adapter. They're actually close-up 'filters' in a little spring-loaded clip-on attachment, but much higher quality than anything else similar.

The DCR-250 is for really close work (bugs etc) and the DCR-150 is less strong, for flowers and stuff. Will work on any lens from about 50mm, 50-200-ish zoom is ideal.

£40 from Amazon. A few thousand examples here http://www.flickr.com/groups/raynoxdcr250/

Thanks fella's, all your suggestions are welcome. Now it's time to sit down and choose.

Hi, I use the macro filters from Kood and I am pleased with the results.:)

I bought a set of Pentax macro filters for my 50mm 1.8 - they're quite interesting to play around with for the money, but I haven't yet had the chance to try a real macro lens. I did find the depth of field is ridiculously small, which is an obvious drawback.

That happens with any macro device - it's an unavoidable function of magnification.

That makes sense - although I haven't noticed the same thing when using the 'macro focus' setting on my Tamron 70-300mm.

Any idea what the difference is between a macro filter and the 'macro' focus option on some lenses?

Macro function on zoom lenses, is more of a close up setting than true macro

Nothing comes close to dedicated Macro Lens, in my opinion

I have the Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX DG Macro lens and wouldn't swap it for any other lens/filter or similar

I used the No.10 dioptre of a set of 4 macro filter on a standard Canon 18-55 IS II and a 550D to get this. I did try with multiple filters on but I got a weird convex/concave distorstion effect with too many on the lens. You've got to watch your DOF ettings when using them though as it makes the DOF tiny.

This was the first pleasing shot with that set up and drove me on to eventually get a dedicated macro lens (100 f2.8L Macro) that I use now. I know it's not the best shot but I'd only had the camera a short while. Shot was taken at 1/200sec, f16 and ISO400 at 55mm.
