Macro extensions and general setup

How close do you want to go? If you want really close, and are thinking of spending some money, then Canon MP-E 65mm is the place to go. Peerless mega-macro lens, though pricey and extreme macro is challenging.

Thinking about your 70-200 Mk2 purchase plus extender, a 2x extender works well with that and might double-up as a passable 2:1 macro on your 100 lens, making it 200mm f/5.6. Or tubes, but you'd be working extremely close with those.

Having said that, if you want to go really close the best way is to accept the close distance issues, eg with that MP-E. To match its magnification with a longer lens would mean having a massively impractial length of tubes.

I don't think you can use the Canon extenders on the 100mm lens.

and the 2x extender on the 70-200 will reduce the maximum aperture to f5.6 so he would definitely be better off with a lens like the 100-400mm L IS lens and get better quality.

Good spot Peter. No you can't use Canon extenders with the 100 macro. Apologies.

You can use the Kenko 1.4x, that doesn't need to actually go inside the rear of the lens, and that's pretty good but not the same thing. I think the Kenko 2x will also fit but I don't know how good that is.

Not sure how the OP would be better off with a 100-400 though.

Well if he wanted extra reach with only a small loss of front end then the 100-400 L IS is perfect and is a much praised lens on here.

The only drawback if you can call it such is that it is push pull action to extend the zoom not the more usual rotating ring most lenses use.
