Although I,m not an avid photographer - certainly not as much as I would like too be - I do enjoy taking close up shots of flowers, insects and the like.
I have a nikon D80 with 18-70mm kit lens plus I have also purchased cheap macro screw on lenses, which I have used, but they don't quite cut it for me.
I,m on a budget of course, otherwise I,d just go out a buy a sigma 105mm macro lens ;), but I,m looking for other suggestions. Should I bite the bullet and get a dedicated fixed macro lens, or how about extension tubes? With extension tubes, I see there are 'dump' cheap types that don't extend the electronics, and the more expensive types that do - whats the pro's & conns for each?
Sorry for all the Q's, but its a complicated subject, and I want to spend my pennies wisely!

Cheers,
Texy

Basically I,d like to know if its worth getting extention tubes, or should I just save and get a dedicated macro lens?

i have seen very decent results with extension tubes. if you are not prepared to lay out for a macro lens then this is your best route.

This photo was taken using extension tubes and a Canon 75-300 standard lens

Hey that is good - what kind of distance were you away from the subject?

I would recommend getting the auto extension tubes if you are on a tight budget, you will get good results with them, pay the extra and get the auto tubes, you have to do a fair bit of messing with the manual ones.
You can save for a macro lens whilst having fun with the tubes and you can still use them with a macro lens.
