Looking to get a new laptop and wondered what specification MBP would be necessary for processing files from a SOny A7R2? Looking at the 15 inch model with 16GB RAM. Any advice appreciated.

it will handle the files ... but will your eyes handle the screen for editing that's the question?

I've got a MacPro and large screen at home so this would really only be for when out and about.

if its only for out and about then yes I thought you ment as the main machine.... which I obv wouldn't recommend ... will handle it fine

I've been looking for something as an upgrade to an i3 powered HP laptop. I'm looking at a desktop essentially as laptop screens (retina or not) are just too variable depending on viewing angle to get a consistent output to work with. I'm now looking at an iMac, though many have suggested a powerful PC instead with a decent screen.

@Ian W all depends if you want the mac operating system or windows tbnh I have both but I'm a network engineer who Microsoft certified so I'm obv going to say windows is the best lol

I've used both and tbh, I'd honestly say I have no preference. Apple's OS is less faffy, but using the actual software is much of a muchness to me. I'd be happy with either, the iMac is just prettier to look at haha

but a s..t to upgrade.....

yep.... but you have to decide if that sexiness is worth it to you or not ;-)

Any of the MBP models will be fine, the 15" are obviously more powerful but to be fair my retina Macbook is good enough for 16mp files and that has a pathetic core-M processor. Yes, quicker would be nicer but as its a travel companion to my iMac it works fine (not sure I'd fancy it with A7R2 files though).

For me it would be more a question of screen size, if it's your only editing machine then I would want 15", if more for travel then I'd be perfectly happy with a 13" model and put the savings to a dock and a screen.

Ok, just for giggles I downloaded some A7R2 raws and had a play on my rMB and it works ok-ish.

It takes a few seconds to render the raw at 100% but once done it pans about and makes adjustments almost instantaneously, not as smooth as my normal 16mp images though.

I wouldn't want this performance from my main editing machine but it goes to show you don't need mega-power to run LR.
