Macbook

Thanks, I eventually found the quote, but no info on who Haco is and the credibility of his opinion.

My own experience has been very good with CleanMyMac (which must be 10 years now), and have found it does what it says it does. But if it's as risky as proposed and I've just been lucky, then I would consider going back to the free options I used to use (which that forum seemed to recommend). Not as convenient, but CleanMyMac has become rather pricey now.
It wasn't just him, but several others. One of which I know have since met and photographed his wedding. He works in IT and works or worked for the UK military (I put 2 and 2 together because I know he works in IT and he mentioned he works for the UK army and have been to the SAS base in Hereford, where I live in our conversation). He uses a Mac for his home use because when I first met up with him for our initial meeting he brought with him his new M1 MacBook Pro back in like 2021.

It pretty much lists it on their web page.
That page looks like a typical Windows advert for something that is totally unnecessary. All that waffle about what it does and a free 7 day trial seems to be a click bait page, once the trial is over can you get rid of it "completely". I think I will keep my £100 as I don't care what if anything useful it can do.

Maybe I should have a look again, never felt the need until now, and when I started using it, the recommendations to use it came from robust sources.

Also a long time Onyx user - I also run the free version of Malwarebytes from time to time but never seen it pick anything up but both of these are at my wish and when convenient.
Clean My Mac picked up a malware that Sophos missed.

I’d be very interested in knowing what you picked up (and what Sophos didn’t detect). Be interesting to see if Malwarebytes finds it.
Sorry, I can't remember, it was over year ago. Sophos runs all the time, and I occasionally run the Clean My Mac virus/Malware utility as a backup check. Not expecting it to find anything, but on this single occasion it did.

I have Malwarebytes and occasionally run it as belt and braces measure. I understand that OSX has an AV built in and grateful to say that I have never knowingly had a problem other than an event after visiting a doubtful site that, to be fair, Safari warned me about.

Running Onyx on a rare occasion will also help tidy anything forgotten but again, OSX generally - in my very humble - opinion does a great job cleaning up after me.

I have one product from the producer of CleanMyMac that has caused issues in the past but as it is paid for and sometimes useful I have kept it - Daisydisk. I have not used CleanMyMac.

The argument for or against Apple and the excessive cost of their kit or if Windows or OSX is best is down to user preference. I use Windows at work and grateful that I remain productive there as others are responsible for keeping it running. At home OSX works well for me and not yet felt the need to pay for CMM but respect those who do.

I bought a new Lenovo last week, awaiting delivery. I really really thought about a macbookpro - when i speced it out - moving from 16gb ram to 64gb was a £400 upgrade and increasing the HDD to 1tb from 512gb something between 200-400. At that point i thought i was being caught with my pants down - no matter how good they are....(!)

I too have bought it, back on March 2013 and used it for 10 years! I thought it was doing a good job keeping my Mac running tip top as well.

I think the difference is that I've never had any issues with it. and have seem clear benefits eg capturing malware that Sophos didn't, properly deleting apps without leaving stuff behind and sorting out low memory freezes with Chrome and Lightroom, which otherwise need me to restart my mac. There are a couple of other things (I I don't use it a lot) which I can't remember right now, but overall I'm reluctant to give it up after more than ten years of using it.

I'm getting a bit lost with who has said what, but I think you said that you had started to have problems with it, whereas I have had none. I have however, contacted their technical support a couple of times and they were excellent.

Yes, it started to crash my iMac. Even after a fresh restore to factory setting.

So far, I've had it on two MacBook Pros, one MacBook Air, on Mac Mini and one M1 Mac Studio with no problems.

Did you contact Macpaw about the crashing, or just give it up based on the forum comments you mentioned.

It stopped when I removed it, it crashed when I had it. Considering it was a fresh install and that is the only variable, and the same hardware for a decade in the same iMac. I just took it off and moved on with my life and not worried about it since.

It was my first problem that I encountered with it too, and if I didn't, I would most certainly be in your shoes right now. We can only speak from our own personal experience.

However, I am not going to put it on my new Mac Mini.

Yes, I'll probably just carry on with it, until I get a problem.

@myotis - perhaps have a look at Onyx and check out the deltas between what that offers and your CleanMyMac. Possibly it’ll cover some of the concerns you have and save some cash.

Thanks, I was using Onyx (and AppClean) before I used CleanMyMac, indeed I have used Onyx (for reasons I can't remember now) since using CleanMyMac, Onyx offers tools that Clean My Mac doesn't. As an aside the Clean My Mac blog offers some very good reviews of the competition, including Onyx and AppClean

CleanMyMac is a lot more convenient than the tools needed to replace it, and until this thread (and links from it) I've only come across good things being said about Clean My Mac. Nor have I personally had any problems, so I don't really have major concerns about using it other than the expense... at the moment.
