Toying with the idea of a Macbook

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTIyMTM

Mainly want to use it for editing and viewing pics when out and about and maybe for small amount of video work.

Main question is would the older White macbook suffice or is the new aluminium 2ghz one worth the extra money for the higher bus speed of the cpu and memory? Would a macbook be ok to work on, or am i going to feel like i am waiting for it to do something all the time...I have a very fast high spec home PC so am used to things happening straight away.

thanks for any help

Go for it! Macs are great for media stuff (ie. editing) - my friend just bought an aluminium one and he loves it - I think it probably is worth the extra bit.

Ally all the way mate. Bought one for just that. I love it, you will regret not going for ally if you dont.

sounding good, how does it compare to running cs3/4 on a PC, I have a 4.2ghz overclocked core2duo with 4gb ram, so was a little concerned about a 2ghz cpu but i know the Mac OS is unix based so runs better than x86 based win OS

Well, I got both the PC and MAC Ver of CS4, the MacBook is the 2.4Ghz with 4Gb RAM. I can in all honestly say, the MacBook runs CS4 better than My Quad Core 3Ghz with 8GB RAM. Not only can you get into the OS in under 20sec, then 7 sec to boot CS4. So 30 sec you can be in CS4, no word of a lie. My first time back to make in 5 or 6 years, and things have come a long way.

cool mate thanks for that , exactly what i was interested in, will have to just wait till the redundancy cheque now, macbook here we come :)

If you are wanting to do video work on it, you won't be able to capture straight to it as the new aluminium ones have (apparently) lost the firewire interface!

I'm buying one of the older black Macbooks on Friday, the spec is still as good as my PC, and with it being OSX it'll probably run quicker too

You will never look back. I love my MAC now, but my PC still has its place too.

yeah can't see me ever ditching a PC as a main machine but the idea of a macbook for portable seems good at the moment

That's why I'm getting one really, to do the odd bit of work on the go...especially getting a head start editing wedding photos! They looks nice and presentable too, so good for showing clients samples etc when I visit :)

I have both the new white Macbook and the older 24" iMac - recently moving from PC. I think that Apple have themselves sorted, the products they produce look great and work well. Unfortunately they are tools that do much the same as Windows.

CS4 works well on both once they had their memory upgraded to 4Gb. If I were to do alot of CS4 processing, I suspect neither would work as well as your PC does and I'd probably want that. That said, I'd buy a Mac to do everything else - they tend to be a pleasure.

Don't wish to **** on your pansies, both Windows and OSX PCs are tools. Neither will change your life, Macs *may* make it a bit more pleasurable. Don't forget you'll need to X Platform (and maybe upgrade) your CS licence,

Chris

My White Macbook does still have firewire!

cool mate, not fussed on firewire so a lack of that is fine, only really interested in using it when away from home so all sounds good think i will go for it when i get the moola.

The standard macbook has ditched the firewire... shame really. However the pro still has firewire 800. Also the white macbook retains firewire. I suspect this is because most users simply never use it.

As for recommending, your PC seems a beefy spec, I'm using an almost 3 year old Macbook (2ghz, 2gb RAM) and it runs CS3 fine, havn't tried CS4 but I hear it may struggle. My gf is just about to buy a new macbook and i think the extra bus speed will really help, that and the 4GB of RAM you can now have. I'd be tempted to check out if you're worried about speed with such a competitive PC, you may be edging into the pro section, especially if you require speed AND firewire.
