Macbook pro with student discount - question

I am going to get new MacBook pro and have a friend who studies at uni. Just checked with the store and they have ut in stock and all i need is my (well, hers) stident card.
Has anyone done anything similar in the past?! I dont feel very good about doing it, but £200 odd that i save would come handy.

So my questions...can she pay with my card or its better to take cash out and she can pay with the cash?
As far as i know there is one to one support after the purchase, can i get it for myself instead?
They email the receipt, should we just give my friend email and she will mail it back to me?

The holder of the student card doesn't have to be the person that pays, but they do need to be in the shop with you.
Get the receipt mailed direct to you.
 
Also make sure you get AppleCare, around an 80% discount with student discount.

Buying with the Student Card is worth it for Applecare alone. Over the last 10 years it's saved me thousands of pounds over numerous Macbook Pros. Buy it.. cause you don't wanna be paying Apple repair rates!

And I think JL give you 2 or 3 year warranty as well, so with the £100 discount offer, then probably work out a similar cost to one from Apple with Apple care (although that is def 3 years)...

Discount / cost of AppleCare with student discount used to be extremely good...daughter was looking for a new Mac about 1 month ago and with her student discount, Apple care was now £114 extra...I phoned Apple directly and this was the price ( I seem to remember it being significantly cheaper) - which actually brought the total price to more than JL were offering it at with 3 years warranty...

JL offers 2 years warranty and i think i'll go with them, good offer and no hastle with the student discount

Do they break a lot? As far as i understand apple care offers 3 years warranty and JL 2, which is not too far

I guess it's more the ease of being able to liaise with Apple directly. My last Macbook Pro I had owned for 3.5 years had issues with the graphics card (Apple replaced it 3 times, along with my battery, keyboard, trackpad and my screen once). Despite me being out of warranty for 6 months, when it broke for the 4th time Apple gave me a brand new Macbook Pro, without much persuasion. I'm not saying your laptop is going to break 4 times - I guess I was a bit unlucky. But, for the sake of £60 it's a no brainer to get it directly from Apple. You wouldn't get the same result from JL..

As for the hassle, I purchased a Mac years ago when I was a student for a mate, was barely an issue at all. Just needed to show or scan the student card and email it - Apple couldn't care less who pays for the laptop. No issues with warranty claims later on too. :)
 
Apple customer service can be awesome (but not always...).

I had a recurring intermittent problem with my wifi connection. After a few attempts at fixing, Apple replaced with a brand new MacBook of a higher spec.

PS, i then reinstalled everything via timeachine, and i still had the wifi problem. I realised i had made some settings changes previously which caused the problem, which i was able to undo quite quickly. Felt a bit guilty that the fault was my own doing....

The speed of any fixes will also likely be quicker if you have an apple store nearby. You have to book an appointment, but once there worst case is that parts will need to be ordered in and fixed in a couple of days.

They break often enough for a 3 year warranty to be a very good idea indeed. Mine needed a new motherboard in the first 3 months, but was OK after that. There was a version of the MBP that started having catastrophic failures after a couple of years. TBH they're just like any other computer except a bit more expensive and with higher resale value.

On Black Friday i called apple to see if they price match and got £118 off 15' touch bar mackbook pro (£100 off offered by JL) I would save around £200 with student discount (as i would pay around £30 to get it), so thought it was not worth all the hassle.
