Instead of buying a whole new system I have decided to upgrade my 2009 Macbook Pro 2.26Ghz 2GB ram. I have orderd 2x4GB Ram upgrade and a SSD which I plan to run the OS and programmes from, store files that I am working on before transferring them to an external back up drive.

I currently run 10.5.8 and have discovered I need to purchase the DVD upgrade to 10.6 and from there I an upgrade to Mavericks via download free? (I have also lost the 10.5 install disc but I don’t think I need it)

What I am unsure about is how to set up the new SSD? I see it as having three options.

  1. Upgrade to 10.6, clone drive then install updates on the SSD
  2. Upgrade to 10.6 then download Maverick to current drive then clone drive to SSD
  3. Upgrade current drive to 10.6 then clean install of Mavericks to SSD, then manually transfer apps and folders to the SSD. Not sure how to do this?

I am a bit confused about what to do here? Any suggestions appreciated.

It's definitely a compatible MacBook Pro.

How do I do 3? Not sure how to install mavericks to the other drive then book from it?
