Macbook pro should I buy one

That is one big advantage of Macs imo - no need for AV software (which can really slow your puter down) and no real risk of viruses.

I go into the MSCONFIG startup tab and just disable everything - it works wonders. Any necessary system bits and bobs don't appear in the startup tab and if your antivirus program is worth the paper its written on it will start itself anyway despite being ticked out of the startup list. Anything else in the list is usually garbage anyway.

Pretty much, at the moment (and normally) I have MSE (AV) and some official windows program (apparently) ticked on... Normally turn off a lot of services that aren't windows ones as well.

With a decent AV* you shouldn't even know it's on, with no/minimal difference (and definately no real world difference).:)

*Not Norton or Macafee for example, which are massively bloated and a major reason some computers slow down when using an AV.

Fair enough - many years ago I installed a trial of Norton and it literally crippled my computer. Was very difficult to get rid of too.

I use Avast on my GF's laptop which seems ok.

avast (the newer orange icon version) is currently using a whopping 13mb of my 4gb on the laptop.. the blue icon older version i think was a little more bloated than that..

edit - in fact on the desktop the older version is using 50mb. still not a big deal as its an 8gb system lol

Well I love my MBP and it is far superior to may previous laptops and desktops. why??
because it works, its that simple.
You know what a devil i am for customising and changing things, i dont need to with this, all i need is more memory as im on 2mb currently, only issue (if youcan call it that)

BUY A MAC!!!! go on, go on, go on ;)

If your going to build a nice desktop to edit photos, don't skimp on the monitor:

Something like the above would be very nice, if you google TN and eIPS LCD's it will tell you all about them.

I think the imac's use IPS/IPA LCD's, thats why they look so good and why they cost more.

If you factor in the price of a high end non TN LCD the prices aren't that bad really :-)

WOW... a Mac/PC thread that's still open! I'd better be quick...

One aspect that's rarely mentioned is that, if you're starting a photography (or any creative) business, there are some clients out there who just won't take you seriously unless they see you on a mac! Sad and Ignorant no doubt but regrettably true.

Yep, nearly got one a while ago!

Would be interesting to see the cost of building a system to the same spec as an imac. When I mean same spec I mean everything, right down to the posh keyboard and mouse!

(using 'normal' prices of course, not ultra ebay bargins!)

That was done in another thread and the 27" one was almost impossible due to the price of the 27" screen. The 20" one would probably come out at a similar price to something you could build and is in fact cheaper than the Sony All in one that they sell (at least it was when we were discussing it).

Apple products may be higher end but they aren't overpriced as such. A decent laptop from a decent manufacturer will cost you a similar amount to a macbook, the iMacs are actually cheaper (see above) than what you can build yourself (although you could get faster hardware) and things like the iPhone are about the same price all the other high end phones (just the contracts are a rip off).

Wouldn't swap my late 2009 MBP for anything (well, maybe an new i7 model lol). I recently stopped using my older PC and currently just use my MBP, either downstairs on the sofa when browsing the net, hooked up to my plasma for watching video content or plugged in to my tablet, external monitor and hard drive for photo and video editing upstairs - until I get a dedicated editing machine. Oh and it comes with me whenever I travel too.

Fantastic machine. As to if it's better than a PC, personal choice really. I don't like to tinker and prefer the OSX interface and the trackpad is a work of art - so it was a no brainer for me.
